Archipelago

The second film by British director Joanna Hogg is subtle, mysterious, murky and utterly distinctive. By Peter Bradshaw

Like unhappy little islands, entire of themselves, some lonely people cluster together for an unsuccessful family reunion in this deeply intelligent new film from British director Joanna Hogg. There is something exacting and audacious in it, something superbly controlled in its composition and technique. The clarity of her film-making diction is a marvel – even, or perhaps especially, when the nature of the story itself remains murkily unrevealed.

Hogg works with a series of static "tableau" camera positions. There is no musical soundtrack, just the ambient sound of birdsong or distant aeroplane buzz, only really apparent when it cuts out into silence for the next scene. Closeups are rare, and when the camera does move – just once in the entire film – it is to reflect something calamitous. Perhaps what emerges primarily is Hogg's

New One-Sheet For James Cameron Produced Sci-Fi Thriller Sanctum

The new 3D thriller 'Sanctum' has been gifted with a brand spanking new one-sheet for all to enjoy. The flick is executively produced by James Cameron and therefore 'must' splash his two previous blockbusting credits on the poster. 'Titanic' and sci-fi actioner 'Avatar', which did the incredible thing of making 'Titanic' suddenly seem bearable, are nicely highlighted to help entice unsuspecting audiences to mindlessly wander into their local multiplex expecting spectacle and little substance. But let's hope director Alister Grierson and scripters Andrew Wight and John Garvin (who also stars) can bring a little more to the underwater table. 'Fantastic Four' star Ioan Gruffudd appears alongside Richard Roxburgh ('Van Helsing'), Alice Parkinson (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Rhys Wakefield, Dan Wyllie, Allison Cratchley, Christopher Baker and John Garvin. Check out the poster below....

A Prophet

Opens: February 12th 2010

Cast: Tahar Rahim, Niels Arestrup, Adel Bencherif, Hichem Yacoubi, Reda Kateb

Director: Jacques Audiard

Summary: Sent to prison, Malik El Djebena falls under the sway of a group of Corsicans who enforce their rule in the prison. As the 'missions' go by, he toughens himself and wins their confidence but uses his intelligence to discreetly develop his own network.

Analysis: Finally scoring a limited release in the Us in February, Jacques Audiard's violent and hard-edged prison drama won the Grand Prix at Cannes, scored Best Film at the London Film Festival, and is already the hotly tipped favourite to take the Oscar for Best Foreign Film late next month.

Reviews have been stellar around the world for the film which quickly became the most universally admired entry in the often hotly contentious first week of Cannes back in May. From a breakout performance by Tahar Rahim,
