Sundance Film Review: ‘L.A. Times’

Sundance Film Review: ‘L.A. Times’
The challenge of finding the right romantic partner seems to be the theme of every other American indie at Sundance, and “L.A. Times” definitely suffers from privileged-white-people-natter-on-about-their-relationships fatigue. But first-time writer-director (and also star) Michelle Morgan brings just enough specificity, and a surprisingly sharp eye, to make the film an interesting calling card for future work. Whether there’s anything here that will appeal beyond a very small niche audience is another matter.

With a heavy dose of Whit Stillman and sprinklings of Woody Allen, Noah Baumbach, and Lena Dunham, among others, Morgan leans on her influences in exploring the intersecting lives and romances of three thirtysomething Angelenos, beginning with Annette (Morgan), an aspiring writer whose withering judgment of everyone and everything in her life proves impossibly irritating.

Annette’s boyfriend Elliot (Jorma Taccone) is the creator of a Z-grade “Game of Thrones” knockoff called “Haggard’s Landing,” which has

Here's a trailer for the Hallmark Channel Original Movie World Premiere that sees Kim Fields reunite with her "Facts of Life" co-star, Lisa Whelchel, in a drama titled "For Better or For Worse," which, I learned today, premieres Saturday, July 19 at 9/8c. The film - an adaptation of the bestselling novel "For Better or For Worse" by Diann Hunt - was shot earlier this year in Vancouver, Canada.  Antonio Cupo co-stars alongside Whelchel and Fields in what is described as a heartwarming romantic comedy about a woman who learns that perhaps there is such a thing as second chances when...

TV Review: Hallmark Hall of Fame’s ‘In My Dreams’

TV Review: Hallmark Hall of Fame’s ‘In My Dreams’
After a decidedly rough patch, the Hallmark Hall of Fame gets a bit of its mojo back in time for Mother’s Day with “In My Dreams,” a magical-realist-tinged romance pairing Katharine McPhee (no, she doesn’t sing) with “Under the Dome’s” Mike Vogel. As is often the case with the brand, the slight premise requires a bit of goodwill to sustain things through to the well-telegraphed ending, but the central duo is so dreamy and the idea so unabashedly romantic it should put those who bother to watch — a challenge since the franchise landed on ABC — in a card-buying mood.

It doesn’t hurt that McPhee and Vogel look like prototypes for the top of a wedding cake, although writers Teena Booth and Suzette Couture, along with director Kenny Leon, manage to scatter enough hurdles to make them helpfully vulnerable.

Vogel’s Nick is a serial one-and-done dater

‘American Mary’ Review

Stars: Katherine Isabelle, Julia Maxwell, Antonio Cupo, Paula Lindberg, Twan Holliday | Written and Directed by Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska

Jen and Sylvia Soska should be on the radar of most fans of the horror genre and it’s progression as a genre with something unique and interesting to offer the current earth or cinema. Their previous, and debut, flick was Dead Hooker in a Trunk, which was written and directed by the spooksome twosome, who also appeared in main roles in the flick. It wasn’t anything special as far as I’m concerned but it has a cult following and it did show the capabilities of these two genuinely interesting filmmakers as well as offering a glimpse at what they could do in a shoestring budget and no-name talent.

American Mary came onto my radar when I saw advertisements for it premiering at London’s Frightfest horror weekend and

14 Things We Learned From the ‘American Mary’ Commentary

At first glance the directing duo of Jen and Sylvia Soska might appear to be little more than a shtick. Twins with jet black hair, wonderfully foul mouths and an affection for the bloody wet stuff, they could easily be mistaken for filmmakers more interested in style than substance. But while their feature debut, Dead Hooker In a Trunk, is a brilliant title in search of a worthwhile film, just three short years later they’ve made a dramatic leap in quality with their sophomore effort. American Mary is part revenge thriller, part black comedy and part body modification training video, and it works hard to tell an original and entertaining story. It’s an odd film destined to stand apart in a genre overrun with ghosts, found footage and masked serial killers, and the fact that it’s anchored by a fantastic female lead performance is just icing on the blood-lined cake. Keep

American Mary's Deadly Charm: A Movie Review

Directors/writers: Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska. Cast: Katharine Isabelle, Antonio Cupo, Tristan Risk, David Lovgren and Paula Lindberg. This horror film fan knows the Soska sisters, Jen and Sylvia, through their previous work, Dead Hooker in a Trunk. This viewer was not a fan of this early work. However, the Soska sisters latest endeavour is a vast improvement over this 2009 film. Their latest, American Mary, takes some time to build momentum, but the journey to the blood-soaked conclusion is still an enjoyable time. There are some weak moments involving shallow characterizations and poor tension between Bloody Mary (Katharine Isabelle) and the villains in this body horror piece; yet, American Mary is a compelling time, mostly due to actress Katharine Isabelle's solid performance. The film's story is diverse. Though, the central story focuses on Mary Mason and her difficulties with school and financial responsibilities. Mary hopes to be a surgeon,

Review: American Mary

Even for a person with no tattoos or piercings and little interest in goth pin-up culture, there’s plenty of interest to explore in American Mary. The story of a struggling medical student who more or less accidentally becomes a body modification expert, the sophomore effort from twin filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska is polished and smart.

American Mary is significant step up in quality from their debut, Dead Hooker In A Trunk, even when it fails to dissect the larger sociological context or even the direct emotional ramifications of its young protagonist’s unconventional career choice. Alternately creepy and languid, incisive and aimless, American Mary examines a provocative subject, heralding the duo as a couple of the genre’s next great voices – that is, as soon as their follow-through proves as strong as their set-up.

Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps) plays Mary Mason, an aspiring surgeon who turns to stripping

American Mary Offers Plenty of Iicky Squirminess

American Mary Offers Plenty of Iicky Squirminess
The MPAA must have busted out the thesaurus when they rated Jen and Sylvia Soska's American Mary, giving it an R for "strong aberrant violent content." The R is deserved, but "aberrant" is a curious choice of words, as if they couldn't bring themselves to use "icky" or "squirminess-inducing." There's certainly plenty of icky squirminess to be induced by this undercooked tale of a medical student (Ginger Snaps' Katharine Isabelle) who becomes a celebrity in an underworld of extreme plastic surgery, body modification, and torture aficionados. It's like Dee Snider's Strangeland with more brains—but not too many more, as the story is unevenly paced, certain character motivations are vague (especially Antonio Cupo's Billy), and the subculture it builds never feels...
