'Waco' Trailer: Taylor Kitsch Transforms for Role as Cult Leader David Koresh
Though the details of what really happened during the 1993 standoff in Waco, Texas, are still debated to this day, a six-part series simply titled Waco will attempt to provide a semblance of an answer when it premieres in January.

The trailer, which dropped Tuesday, shows a nearly unrecognizable Taylor Kitsch proselytizing to a group of his followers as David Koresh, the mysterious cult leader who led a group that came to be known as the Branch Davidians.

"You've looked to me to be your leader, to guide you on this journey,

Anguish review – a muddled tale of teenage obsession

Sonny Mallhi’s non-scary thriller offers neither supernatural chills nor real-world psychological insights

A puzzle, a frustration and a disappointment … Sonny Mallhi’s non-scary movie Anguish is all this, and not much more. (No relation to Bigas Luna’s 1987 cult classic Anguish, incidentally.) Yet in technical terms it is not badly made by any stretch. It’s just that there is a fatal generic uncertainty about what the film is trying to do. It offers neither honest supernatural chills nor real-world psychological insights: just a muddle.

The film begins with that traditionally dodgy claim of being inspired by true events, which should really be tested by a documentary. Ryan Simpkins plays Tess, a moody teenager living with Jessica (Annika Marks), who is effectively a single mom, as her partner, Tess’s dad, is away in the army, so they communicate via Skype. Tess is on medication for depression, a condition

Glasgow Frightfest: ‘Anguish’ Review

Stars: Ryan Simpkins, Annika Marks, Karina Logue, | Written and Directed by Sonny Mallhi

Sonny Mallhi is probably not a name on anyones horror radar, however Mallhi was the producer on films like The Strangers, House at the End of the Street and the fantastic 2014 Fightfest flick At the Devils Door (aka Home). With Anguish he turns his hand at not only writing (he previously penned the psycho-stalker films The Roommate and Crush) but directing. Now I mention all those other films because Mallhi’s work has been met with various degrees of success, both commercially and critically – so going into Anguish I had no idea what to expect. I did hope for something as stunningly scary as At the Devils Door, what we got is something akin more to The Roommate

Apparently inspired by a true possession story (though the opening titles talk more about teenagers mental health than

Poster and trailer for supernatural horror Anguish

Ahead of its UK premiere at Glasgow FrightFest this coming week, a new poster and trailer have arrived online for the upcoming supernatural horror Anguish; take a look here…

Teenage Tess has been suffering from anxiety ever since her mother Jessica discovered her banging her head against the wall when she was a child. On a steady diet of medication ever since, it becomes clear her dissociative identity disorder condition might not be necessarily psychological when they move to a small house in Texas and Tess begins experiencing hallucinations suggesting she’s more susceptible to spirits of the deceased. Especially ghost girl Lucy killed in a tragic accident and still being grieved for by her tormented mother. Eerie, jittery and surprisingly moving, Anguish is the creepiest and most resonant American independent horror since It Follows, showcasing a breakout performance by Ryan Simpkins (Twixt, Surveillance, Hangman) playing the withdrawn Tess.

Written and directed by Sonny Mullhi,

Anguish Review

Within a matter of hours, Anguish went from an ambiguous horror title to one of my top horror films of the year. I do my best for you people, but with twenty-something movies releasing per week, a few are destined to fall through the cracks. Lucky for me, “Horror Film Twitter” made sure this heartfelt possession thriller didn’t get buried under J.J. AbramsStar Wars hoopla – and with proper reasoning. Rookie director Sonny Mallhi makes a statement with this tightly restrained, yet effectively creepy flick by focusing more on emotion than cheap, unnecessary scares. A good genre movie makes you feel something more than physical chills, and Anguish has that wonderfully uncomfortable feeling about it in the best of ways.

Mallhi sets his stage by introducing us to Lucy (Amberley Gridley) and her mother Sarah (Karina Logue), as they’re driving down a quiet highway. Sarah pulls the car

Blu-ray Review: John Hawkes, Helen Hunt Amaze in ‘The Sessions’

Chicago – It’s a shame how box office numbers play such a large factor in Oscar votes. Just imagine if “The Blind Side” was a flop. Sandra Bullock wouldn’t have been allowed within a billion miles of the Oscar podium. If Ben Lewin’s “The Sessions” was given a fair shot with audiences, it would’ve easily brought its star, John Hawkes, an Oscar nomination.

As Mark O’Brien, a Polio-stricken writer confined to an iron lung, Hawkes delivers the sort of transcendently brilliant work that ranks right alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s phenomenal intensity in “The Master” and Daniel Day-Lewis’s astonishing transformation in “Lincoln.” The painstaking research he conducted, including several viewings of Jessica Yu’s Oscar-winning 1996 documentary short, “Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O’Brien,” is apparent in every frame of Hawkes’s sublime portrayal. He resists sentiment even when Lewin’s script succumbs to it.
