‘Happy!’: Patton Oswalt and Christopher Meloni’s R-Rated Skype Sessions Enabled The Year’s Weirdest Buddy Comedy Series
Patton Oswalt defines the protagonist in Syfy’s new comedic thriller “Happy!” by referencing a classic buddy picture. “Remember in ‘Midnight Run,’ when Charles Grodin is telling DeNiro, ‘the reason you have an ulcer is that you have two modes of expression: Silence and rage’? That’s Nick Sax,” Oswalt told co-star Christopher Meloni, who plays the lead character. “It’s either glowering silence and then just explosive and it’s hilarious.”

It’s not a bad way to sum up the relationship between Meloni’s and Oswalt’s chatacters in “Happy!”, which premieres this Wednesday. But here’s the big difference: Rather than playing somewhat sane humans, Meloni stars as incredibly unstable private investigator Nick Sax, and Oswalt is the voice of Happy, a CGI flying unicorn who is either a figment of Nick’s imagination or the manifestation of a little girl’s imaginary friend.

Either way, only Nick can see Happy,

Simon Pegg interview: Man Up, Tintin 2, rom coms, directing

Simon Pegg chats to us about rom coms, Man Up, writing, Tintin 2, visiting Andy Serkis on The Jungle Book set, directing, and more...

Before he heads off to make the next Star Trek film, Simon Pegg is back in UK cinemas this weekend for the really rather good romantic comedy, Man Up. He co-stars with Lake Bell in the movie, and ahead of its release, he spared us some time to chat about the film, and what he's up to next...

It's an interesting sign of the times that BBC Films, which started out making movies that couldn't be made really, back with Truly Madly Deeply....

Another South Bank movie!

True. Back then, BBC Films was making niche films that were struggling to get made anywhere else. And here, with Man Up, a rom com seems to have become one of those niche films.

Absolutely, yeah. You make a very good point.

Edgar Wright interview: The World's End, Ant-Man, Statham

Interview Simon Brew 29 Nov 2013 - 06:03

Edgar Wright looks back at The World's End, and talks The Godfather Part II, Crank and moviemaking too...

Out now on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK is the final part of the Cornetto trilogy, The World's End. We spoke to Simon Pegg about the film earlier in the way, but we've since also sat down with its director and co-writer, Edgar Wright. And here's how the chat went...

The interesting thing about the response to The World's End, and I've seen this with Hot Fuzz to an extent too, is that the second reaction to the film tends to be different to the first. That the first watch is quite a broad one, but the second uncovers what's under the surface. Themes such as lonliness, and the destructiveness of Gary.

So how closely do you follow that? Does the first reaction bother you per se,

Pick Up This Cherry Bomb for Thrills: A Movie Review

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by director Kyle Day. Director: Kyle Day. Writer: Garrett Hargrove. Cast: Julin, Nick Manning, Denise Williamson, John Gabriel Rodriguez, and Allen Hackley. Tagline: "Don't light her fuse." Cherry Bomb joins a long list of rape revenge thrillers. From The Last House on the Left to I Spit on Your Grave, from Baise Moi to Irreversible, there have been dozens of entries in this genre. Director Kyle Day's first entry into this prolific category is stylized and reminiscent of John Carpenter's visual and auditory style such as Assault on Precinct 13 (1976). Day's directing style is more over-the-top compared to Carpenter; this is also an exploitation film after all. In the end, Cherry Bomb is an enjoyable ride with gunfire and violence overruling the nudity and sexuality. The story of the film focuses on the "Pussy Hut." This is a strip club where Cherry,

Weekend Report: 'Think Like a Man' Repeats, Four Openers Underwhelm

Four new nationwide releases landed with a thud this weekend, which allowed Think Like a Man to repeat atop the domestic box office chart. The Top 12 earned just $97.1 million on the final weekend in Spring 2012, which is obviously way off from the same frame last year when Fast Five opened to $86.2 million.Think Like a Man fell 48 percent to $17.6 million. Through ten days in theaters, the movie has already made $60.5 million, which makes it the highest-grossing movie from April 2012 ahead of Titanic 3D ($56.3 million). Based on Sunday estimates, The Pirates! Band of Misfits was the highest-grossing movie among the new releases, though that isn't really saying much*the stop-motion animation flick claimed second place with a meager estimated $11.1 million. That's lower than Arthur Christmas's $12.1 million debut in November, which makes it the worst opening ever for British production house Aardman Animation.Considering Aardman's best opening ever is a paltry $18.8 million for Flushed Away,

Friday Report: 'Think Like a Man' Crushes Newcomers

The big winner on Friday appears to be a movie that isn't even out yet*audiences largely rejected all four brand-new movies, which may be the latest sign that anticipation for The Avengers is reaching a fever pitch. Thanks to the middling performance of the newcomers, Think Like a Man and The Lucky One easily held on to the top two spots.Think Like a Man fell 55 percent to an estimated $5.5 million on Friday. It's now made $48.4 million, and is just two days away from topping Titanic 3D to become April 2012's highest-grossing movie. Meanwhile, The Lucky One dropped a slightly steeper 57 percent to $3.9 million. The Zac Efron-Nicholas Sparks romantic drama has earned a solid $32.5 million through eight days.Even with what looked like the formula for rom-com success, The Five-Year Engagement only managed to generate $3.5 million in ticket sales on Friday. That's less than half the opening

Forecast: 'Five-Year' Will Likely Lead Last Weekend of Spring

On what will forever be known as "that weekend before The Avengers opened," four new nationwide releases hit theaters. With its strong cast and connection to Bridesmaids, The Five-Year Engagement appears to have the best chance of finishing in first, though its theater count (2,936) trails that of Aardman Animation flick The Pirates! Band of Misfits (3,358). The Raven and Safe also debut this weekend, though neither of these titles has much of a chance of cracking the Top Three. The Five-Year Engagement reteams Forgetting Sarah Marshall writer-director Nick Stoller with writer-actor Jason Segel. That movie opened to $17.7 million in April 2008 on its way to $63.2 million, and it's fairly well-regarded among comedy fans today (it has a 7.3 rating on IMDb, which is identical to the rating for Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin). For The Five-Year Engagement, though, the Forgetting Sarah Marshall connection has taken a backseat to a potentially much more

Cherry Bomb (2011)

Directed by: Kyle Day

Written by: Garrett Hargrove

Cast: Julin Jean, John Gabriel Rodriguez, Nick Manning, Denise Williamson

Texas has a storied film heritage. Over the years, the Lone Star State has given the world a wide range of cinematic talent, including directors as diverse as Tobe Hooper, Richard Linklater, Wes Anderson, Tex Avery, Terrence Malick and Robert Rodriguez.

Today, the state's filmmaking legacy continues to thrive. The film communities in Austin, Dallas and Houston are full of committed industry professionals who — despite the seeming best efforts of certain political players — are flourishing, making movies of all shapes and sizes. I know this to be true because, having spent the past few days at SplatterFest, I've seen the evidence.

Last week, besides screening several short films by regional filmmakers, SplatterFest hosted the world premiere of Cherry Bomb, the self-assured debut feature from Texas-based director Kyle Day.

An homage to the low-budget movies of the 1980s,

With director Omar Naim’s supernaturally-tinged Dead Awake opening in limited release this Friday, December 3 (the flick is set to hit DVD/Blu-ray on March 29 of next year), this writer caught up today with one of the film’s principals, actress Amy Smart, who dished on the movie as well as the possibility of a third film in the Crank series and her potential inclusion in a future horror project.

Known best as a comedic actress for her turns in the films Just Friends and Road Trip (among others) and to genre fans for her roles in The Butterfly Effect and Mirrors (as well the gonzo action flicks Crank and Crank: High Voltage, in which she portrayed the girlfriend of actor Jason Statham’s adrenalized hit-man ‘Chev Chelios’), Smart appears in Dead Awake as ‘Natalie’, the long-lost love of young funeral parlor employee ‘Dylan’ (actor Nick Stahl), a young man
