Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer Reunite for New Christmas Comedy

Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer Reunite for New Christmas Comedy
More than six years after the Best Picture nominee The Help took the careers of Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer to new heights, the actresses are reuniting for an untitled Christmas comedy. The project was at the center of a huge bidding war that Universal eventually won, over 20th Century Fox and Paramount, with the pitch coming from Jessica Chastain herself and her Freckle Films production president Kelly Carmichael, who both wrote the treatment, with Peter Chiarelli (Crazy Rich Asians) attached to write the script. Both Chastain and Carmichael are set to produce through their Freckle Films banner, alongside Maven Pictures' Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler.

Both Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer will portray two women who are trying to brave the elements and get back home for Christmas, although no further story details were given for this Jessica Chastain Holiday Comedy. Executive VP of production Erik Baiers and

Hollywood Is Nearing Its Superhero Saturation Point

Quite recently, actor-director Jodie Foster — when speaking about the Black Mirror episode she helmed — made it a point to express her dislike of superhero films and what their abundance has done to cinema, claiming that they were the cinematic equivalent of theme parks and that they would eventually ruin the viewing habits of the world. She’s not alone in her opinion of superhero films. Several celebrities have expressed their disdain for what the genre has done to cinema, including Emma Thompson, Naomi Watts and Simon Pegg.

10 Directors to Watch: Claire McCarthy Explores Shakespeare’s Feminine Side in ‘Ophelia’

10 Directors to Watch: Claire McCarthy Explores Shakespeare’s Feminine Side in ‘Ophelia’
It’s serendipitous timing that McCarthy’s third feature, “Ophelia,” is being released in the midst of the #MeToo movement.

The film, set in the 14th century but spoken in a contemporary voice, is a re-imagining of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Based on the novel by Lisa Klein and adapted for the screen by Semi Chellas, it brings Ophelia, the tortured prince’s love interest whose internal conflicts drive her to madness, to the forefront of the story.

Female identity, what it means to be a woman and power dynamics are all themes that McCarthy — who has been with the project for six years — was intent on exploring but found herself fighting for: “In many ways, I wanted to honor the original ‘Hamlet’ and turn the story on its head,” she says. “But that’s been a struggle because it meant putting females in leading roles.” (Debuting in the Premieres section at Sundance, “Ophelia” — the

In Praise of Laura Dern: TV's Mvp of 2017

In a year in which one man's Twitter account became the world's barometer of international crisis, it can be difficult to find things upon which we can all agree. However, here's one truth that seems irrefutable across party lines: Laura Dern makes everything better. Whether it's her broad comedy in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, her refashioning of an iconic character in Twin Peaks: The Return, or her award-winning work on Big Little Lies, her year was as varied as it was memorable. And that's not even including the fact that she
