Review: ‘Angelica’ is an Erratic Psychosexual Victorian-Era Ghost Story

Midway through Angelica, a medium (played by a hammy, bug-eyed Janet McTeer) talks to Constance (Jena Malone) about the ghostly apparition plaguing her and her daughter Angelica at night. “I’m not a man,” she says. “Do not tell me what you know, or what you can prove. Tell me what you feel.” It’s one line out of many writer/director Mitchell Lichtenstein uses in his psychosexual Victorian-era ghost story to make his points about misogyny and sexual repression clear, although his blunt-force clarity ends up strangling away any sense of tension or intrigue. For a film dealing with the unknown of the supernatural, it wants viewers to know as much as possible about its subtext.

Before things started going bump in the night, Constance found herself living out a storybook romance. An orphan with no status or money to her name, she catches the eye of scientist Joseph

Official Trailer for Horror Thriller Film 'Angelica' Starring Jena Malone

"The evil that troubles your home must see that I am your invited guest." Freestyle has revealed an official trailer for the horror thriller Angelica, which has been sitting on the shelf for two years awaiting release. Angelica is the latest film from Mitchell Lichtenstein, the director of that wacky, freaky horror film Teeth from a decade ago. This is a supernatural thriller set in Victorian England about a couple who encounter a ghost in their house after having a baby named Angelica. It's described as a "spellbinding ghost story about desire, repression and its consequences", which sounds like it could be good, but also sounds like it could be bad. Jena Malone stars, also with Ed Stoppard, Janet McTeer, Tovah Feldshuh, Charles Keating, Daniel Gerroll, and James Norton. The footage is creepy, but it doesn't seem like anything that special. Here's the official trailer (+ old poster) for Mitchell Lichtenstein's Angelica,

Episode four of The Frankenstein Chronicles, feat. Sean Bean, threw yet more potential killers into the suspect pool...

This review contains spoilers.

1.4 The Fortune Of War

Taking its title from where the series left us and Inspector John Marlott last week, episode four of The Frankenstein Chronicles took us right back to the grubby Fortune of War pub. The 19th century’s answer to Harvester isn't somewhere many people would voluntarily return to, but Marlott had work to do, hoping to bump into snatcher, killer, stitcher n’ seller suspect number one “Billy the Child Catcher”. The leads that led Marlott here: deputy Joseph Nightingale knows that dead bodies are transported through the tunnels snaking underneath the Fortune of War; grave robber Pritty knows which locals are dealing in death to pay the rent; and witness Flora knows Billy was the one who snatched missing child, Alice. Unfortunately,

Youth review [Lff 2015]: “Caine, Keitel & Weisz are excellent”

Youth review: A film with a great heart, with three superb performances by Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel and Rachel Weisz pumping through it. Youth review

Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel lead the cast in this unusual comedy/ drama from Italian director Paulo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty, This Must Be The Place).

The story revolves around two friends, Mick (Keitel) a Hollywood movie director and writer, and Fred (Caine), an award-winning composer, who are on holiday in the Alps at a very luxurious hotel. We meet Fred at afternoon tea in the grounds of said hotel where he is meeting with a royal officer, and seemingly being offered a knighthood and the chance to perform his greatest work in front of the Queen and Prince Phillip, an opportunity that he immediately declines due to ‘personal reasons.’ Mick, on the other hand, is in the final stages of writing the screenplay for his next,

TV Review: ‘Home Fires’

TV Review: ‘Home Fires’
The embers from World War II burn so brightly that there are an endless number of ways to revisit it. So even if “Home Fires” is the “Masterpiece” equivalent of “small ball” — similar in tone and look to, say, “Call the Midwife” — the outbreak of the war, against the backdrop of a small British village, provides an extremely fertile environment for soapy doings. Although the spine of the maiden six-episode run deals with the Women’s Institute, and its members finding their roles on the home front, that’s merely the hook, which, like many of these productions, methodically reels you in.

The central and showiest struggle pits the amiable but strong-willed Frances Barden (“Downton Abbey’s” Samantha Bond) against Joyce Cameron (Francesca Annis), a classic upper-crust snob, accustomed to running roughshod over the women who pass through her orbit in the bustling hamlet of Great Paxford. Yet as the
