HBO’s ’Game of Thrones’ and Anti-Netflix Strategy Ruled 2017; Here’s What’s Ahead for 2018

HBO is pondering a post-“Game of Thrones” universe, but it’s been here before. Of course, the TV landscape is a lot more competitive than it was when “The Sopranos” ended a decade ago and left the network hunting for a new hit. But HBO is also much bigger than it was in 2007, with a deeper bench of content and a thriving digital service. That’s why HBO still at the top of its game, despite being beset on all sides by an ever-increasing TV landscape that includes some serious competition from streaming platforms.

In 2017, HBO continued to dominate in ratings and awards, putting its faith in delivering quality shows that have household name recognition as well as critical appeal. The ABC midseason series For the People has temporarily shut down production “for some additional script work,” according to our sister site Deadline. The delay is only expected to last about two and a half weeks and shouldn’t affect the planned rollout next year. (ABC hasn’t given For the People a premiere date yet.)

Among those set to participate are J.J. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have set aside the November 15, 2019 release date for their upcoming holiday comedy entitled Margie Claus, which has Melissa McCarthy set to star and produce, while co-writing the script. The actress' husband Ben Falcone will direct from a script he and Melissa McCarthy co-wrote with their Groundlings collaborator Damon Jones. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone will both produce through their On the Day production company.

Deadline reports that the story is set on Christmas Eve, when Santa Claus goes mysteriously missing. Margie Claus (Melissa McCarthy) is then forced to go on a rescue mission to find him, leaving the North Pole for the first time in years. This report claims New Line is hoping this movie could have the same sort of success as their 2003 holiday classic Elf, which took in over $220 million at the global box office and also spawned a Broadway musical hit.

Richard E. Grant, Jane Curtin, Dolly Wells, Anna Deavere Smith, and Jennifer Westfeldt have joined the cast of Melissa McCarthy’s dark comedy “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”

Variety reported in March that McCarthy would star in Fox Searchlight adaptation of Lee Israel’s memoir with “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” director Marielle Heller attached to helm from a script by Nicole Holofcener. Shooting began Monday in New York City.

Producers are Anne Carey and Amy Nauiokas of Archer Gray, partnered with Israel’s friend and longtime confidant David Yarnell. Pamela Hirsch, Jawal Nga, and Bob Balaban are executive producers.

McCarthy will portray Israel, who made her living in the 1970s and ’80s writing profiles of stars such as Katharine Hepburn and Tallulah Bankhead, cosmetics executive Estee Lauder, and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen.
