Phantasm

Don Coscarelli’s B-movie smash has some of the childs-eye fever dream atmosphere of 1953’s Invaders From Mars. The movie pins its notoriety on its central villain, “The Tall Man”, played by the imposing Angus Scrimm, an otherworldly undertaker who manufactures zombies out of the recently deceased. Made for 300,000, the movie took in 12 million at the box office but oddly, the inevitable sequel didn’t appear for another nine years.

The Bottom Shelf: Troll 2, Phantasm, The Entity

Nick Aldwinckle Jun 5, 2017

We round up the latest horror-tinged Blu-ray and DVD releases....

So, after a brief hiatus, it turns out a lot’s happened in the few months between these round ups. A snap general election has been called, terror has struck at the heart of Manchester and a scandal approaching Watergate levels has hit the U.S presidency. More importantly, Troll 2 has finally come to UK Netflix and is the cherry on the cake made entirely of a series of kind of wonderful, kind of… not films on DVD and Bluray.

So, 1990’s Troll 2, you may or may not be aware of, is generally regarded as one of the very greatest 'so bad it’s good' movies. There are many worse (The Rollerblade Seven or Gary Oldman little person rom-com Tiptoes come to mind), though it’s difficult to think of many other truly awful movies

Blu-ray Review – Phantasm 1-5 Limited Edition Collection

Phantasm 1-5 Limited Edition Blu-ray Collection

Directed by Don Coscarelli/David Hartman.

Starring Angus Scrimm, A. Michael Baldwin, Reggie Bannister, Bill Thornbury, James Le Gros, Paula Irvine, Samantha Phillips, Gloria Lynne Henry, Kevin Connors, Heidi Marnhout, Dawn Cody, Stephen Jutras, and Daniel Roebuck.

Synopsis:

All five Phantasm movies are given the Arrow Video treatment in a limited edition box set filled with extras and presented in rather fetching sphere-shaped packaging.

There’s a good chance that most horror connoisseurs will already own a set of the Phantasm movies as they have been released in splendid DVD box sets before and been treated rather well, coming in exclusive packaging and containing bonus discs full of extra material to give you as much Phantasm-related tomfoolery as you could ever want. But that was before the invention of Blu-ray and back when there were only four movies in the franchise, and things

Phantasm: A Beginner’s Guide

Ben Robins with a beginner’s guide to Phantasm

One of cult fandom’s most dearly loved horror franchises has finally been given the blu-ray upgrade it deserves this year, off the back of not just a brand new sequel, but also a J.J. Abrams-backed 4K restoration of the original. Spanning five movies, countless casting back and forths, and nearly 40 years of production woes and seriously devoted fan conventions, the Phantasm series has finally, at long last, pulled to a close.

And whilst it might not be quite as expansive (or as widely known) as a lot of the genre’s other heavy-hitters like Friday the 13th, Halloween or A Nightmare on Elm Street, Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm movies hold a special place in horror lore, as not just one of the only long-running franchises to be consistently owned and controlled by the same person, but also as one

2017 Overlook Film Festival Announces Inaugural Lineup, Including a Tribute to Roger Corman
The newly formed Overlook Film Festival has announced it inaugural year programming lineup, including 37 films (20 features and 17 short films from 16 countries), along with a bevy of location-appropriate genre-themed parties, interactive events, and live experiences. This year, the festival will also fete director Roger Corman with their Master of Horror Award. The award “was established to honor a living legend who has contributed lasting innovations to the genre throughout a long career, inspiring new filmmakers for years to come.”

The fest is styled a 4-day celebration of horror that runs from April 24 – 30 at the historic Timberline Lodge located in Mt. Hood, Oregon, featured in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” as the location of the infamous Overlook Hotel. The new festival comes from some of the same minds behind the now-defunct Stanley Film Festival, a similar horror-themed gathering based in a hotel in Estes Park, Colorado that inspired Stephen King to write his 1977 “Shining” novel.

The Last Horror Blog: 'Split' Talk, 'Phantasm' Box Set, 'The Belko Experiment' Trailer and More

  • Movies.com
James McAvoy and M. Night Shyamalan go behind-the-scenes on Split – I’m cautiously optimistic about Split, the latest genre offering from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan. The director seems to have regained his footing with 2015’s surprise hit The Visit, and if the trailers are any indication, he looks to build on that with his latest – a tale of an abduction by a man with multiple personalities. The film is slated to open this weekend, so there’s no better time to see what Shyamalan and star James McAvoy have to say about the project in this new behind-the-scenes clip. Enjoy. Phantasm box set launches in March – If you can’t get enough of Angus Scrimm and those deadly flying silver balls, then you’re in luck – Well...
