Anti-People (Review)

2011 - 10 mins. - Rated R

D: Darin Mangan

C: Joseph D. Reitman, Rick Dawson,Sarah Agor, Bo Barrett

After being in a state of drunkenness for an extended period of time, a man goes to make amends with the brother he hasn't seen in four years, but things don't go exactly as planned.

Intriguing, though not entirely successful short film certainly leaves an impression with a haunting finale, but it could have used more tension in exploring the relationship between the characters. The main scenario and how it unfolds in Anti-People never quite generates enough suspense. The unease, the anxiety that the characters feel towards one another never truly becomes palpable. For a ten minute short, the characters are well developed. There's a sense of who they are, what they're all about. The finale is the type of ending that can give audiences something to talk about long after the film is over with.

MTV: 30 years of innovation and corporate rock'n'roll

Grumbled about by the left, hated by the American right, MTV has nevertheless redefined the way people relate to music

As any pub quiz specialist will know, the first video broadcast by MTV back in 1981 was Buggles's Video Killed the Radio Star. That first programme, prefaced with the ominously stiff announcement "Ladies and gentlemen, rock'n'roll" and played over footage of the Apollo 11 moon landing, was watched by just a few thousand people. Today, MTV is a global franchise, with numerous sister channels and offshoots, so broad in its outreach that it represents not so much a TV channel as the condition of popular culture.

Radio stars didn't immediately die with the inception of MTV – during the 1980s and 90s, the likes of Dire Straits, Sting, Madonna and later Nirvana survived and thrived in its medium. However, depressingly for some, it did redefine the way we related to popular music.

Annie Duke on Divorce: Don’t Make Kids Pay for Parents’ Mistakes

Ethan Miller/Getty Celebrity Apprentice star Annie Duke is a single mom by label only. The 43-year-old is quick to point out to MomLogic that between her live-in boyfriend of four years Joe Reitman, an “extremely involved” ex-husband in Ben Duke and a nanny, she’s hardly going it alone.

“I have a relatively easy single parent life — we do support each other so much in our parenting and really do co-parent in every sense of the word,” she says of Ben. “When people ask me to speak about being a single mother, I often say I couldn’t even begin to speak upon those issues!” Emerging from their divorce unscathed is a source of pride for the one-time couple, who together are parents to Maud, 14, Leo, 11,  Lucy, 9, and Nell, 7. Annie adds,

“I wish that every divorced couple would remember this: You chose your partner, so take responsibility for that decision.
