What Happened To Alex Proyas?

Tom Jolliffe looks at the career, rise and fall of Alex Proyas

Born to Greek parents in Egypt and subsequently raised in Australia, you could say that Alex Proyas has an interesting background. He started, as a lot of film directors have, in music videos (working with the likes of Inxs and Sting). To many his first film might be assumed as The Crow, but several years earlier, and fresh out of college he made Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Clouds. This was a small post-apocalyptic film, every bit as odd as the title suggests, but undoubtedly carrying a certain Oz charm.

When The Crow was in development, the source material being so heavily influenced by music (particularly The Cure, Joy Division and Iggy Pop) and with an intention to include a notable soundtrack to the film, meant that there was a natural lean toward hiring a director with a music video background.

Review: Russell Mulcahy's Tale Of The Mummy (1998), a cheap and cheesy take on the venerable monster

I vaguely remember watching Tale of the Mummy with my parents in a movie theatre when I was a kid. This was back in 1998, when Stephen SommersThe Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser (one of my all-time guilty pleasures, by the way) was at the height of its popularity —films with similar themes and plots, such as Russell Mulcahy’s Tale, were taking advantage of the hype for Universal’s summer blockbuster. As a kid, I really didn’t know the difference between both pictures, and was only excited to see yet another Mummy movie on the big screen. But while Sommers’ film is an entertaining action-adventure populated by memorable characters and featuring state-of-the-art digital effects (for its time), Tale… is a completely different kind of beast....

  • IF.com.au
David Wenham on set of his directorial feature debut, 'Ellipsis'..

In the second part of his interview with If, David Wenham chats about his recent roles in 'Wake in Fright', 'In Like Flynn' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales'...

When David Wenham was offered the role of the police sergeant Jock Crawford in the miniseries Wake in Fright he initially recoiled at the idea.

As a passionate admirer of Canadian director Ted Kotcheff.s seminal 1971 movie based on the Kenneth Cook novel he thought the idea of a remake was ridiculous.

Wenham had watched the restored movie twice, at the Sydney Film Festival and at the Chauvel cinema, rating it as a visceral experience and an incredible piece of filmmaking.

However he changed his mind after reading Stephen M. Irwin.s script for the Network Ten two-parter directed by Kriv Stenders.

The director of Highlander is making an Errol Flynn biopic

David Crow May 9, 2017

The director of Highlander and The Shadow has been tapped to direct a biopic on Errol Flynn's early years as a treasure hunter.

Errol Flynn is one of Hollywood’s very first action stars. Known for his dashing good looks (and his notorious after hours affairs), Flynn enjoyed a swashbuckling career in Hollywood throughout the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, famously defining the pirate subgenre with turns in Captain Blood (1935) and The Sea Hawk (1940), and going West, young man, for the genre’s first Technicolor extravaganza Dodge City (1938), as well as the classic piece of historical revisionism that is They Died With Their Boots On (1941). Of course, to many, he simply remains the definitive Prince of Thieves from The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). Sorry, Kevin.

But Flynn had plenty of adventures before he fell into movie song, drink, and lechery. And it appears it will be getting

Why John Wick director Chad Stahelski is the perfect choice to reboot Highlander

Tom Jolliffe on why John Wick director Chad Stahelski is the perfect choice to helm the Highlander reboot…

Stunt-man turned director Chad Stahelski has certainly had a good start to his burgeoning career as an action auteur. John Wick began what is now in the process of becoming a hugely successful franchise. Two films in, with a booming and expansive box office appeal. Next up for him is, all being well (as this project has long gestated and had directors come and go, year on year) is a remake of Highlander.

Now I should state two things now. Firstly, I love Highlander. The first film is an underrated piece of brilliance. From the visuals, to the music to the sheer style of it, Highlander is one of a kind. It then spawned four more films (none of which were good) and a TV show, as well as comics, anime and more.

Director Chad Stahelski Envisions Highlander Reboot As A Trilogy, Draws Comparisons To John Wick

For years, the Highlander remake was passed around various writers and directors like the cinematic equivalent of a hot potato, effectively sentencing Lionsgate and Summit’s fantasy actioner to the shelf in perpetuity. The dormant project was then given a lifeline late last year after John Wick co-director Chad Stahelski climbed aboard to direct and develop Lionsgate’s reboot, and the filmmaker has now offered up some tantalizing new details while doing the press rounds for the imminent John Wick: Chapter 2.

First up, Stahelski spoke to Collider regarding his long-time affinity with Highlander, along with the possibility of expanding the universe into a bona fide trilogy. News that Lionsgate is eager to engineer a new series of fantasy blockbusters isn’t all that surprising, particularly now that The Divergent Series has been overhauled for a TV finale and is all but set to go out on a whimper.

Synopsis:

“There can be only one.” Cult classic film Highlander arrives on Blu-ray and two-disc DVD in a new 30th Anniversary Edition that features new interviews with director Russell Mulcahy and star Christopher Lambert, along with a commentary with Mulcahy, a two-hour documentary, deleted scenes, and an archival interview with Lambert.

Highlander is a movie I hadn’t watched since I first saw it way back when, probably on cable or on VHS at a friend’s house, so I was intrigued to revisit it for this new 30th Anniversary Edition. I remember thinking at the time that it was a cool concept and a fun movie, but my jaded late-40s-year-old self now sees an uneven film, one that went for camp too many times.

The movie stars Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod,
