‘Jupiter’s Moon’ Tops Spain’s Sitges Festival

‘Jupiter’s Moon’ Tops Spain’s Sitges Festival
Barcelona — Cannes competition entry “Jupiter’s Moon,” directed by Kornél Mundruczó, took best picture and F/X awards at Sitges’ 50th International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, which wraps Saturday.

Awarded titles suggest a balance between the author-driven, arthouse genre with supernatural elements – such as The Match Factory’s “Jupiter’s Moon,” an existential supernatural thriller with black comedy touches exploring immigrant crisis, terrorism, and the West’s loss of values – and features closely linked to more traditional genres and sub-genres like revenge thrillers and horror Westerns. Notably, two main category awards went to movies directed or co-directed by women. French-Brazilian “As Boas Maneiras” directed by Jualiana Rojas and Marco Dutra won the Critics Award.

Sold by Paris’ Charades and premiering at Toronto’s Midnight Madness, Coralie Fargeat’s feature debut’s “Revenge,” a stylish rape-revenge horror thriller, took best director Fargeat snagged the Citizen Kane Award for an up-and-coming director.

The gang tries to escape but disaster strikes when Paul Naschy’s character gets shot in the head. Review: "Count Dracula's Great Love" (1971) Starring Paul Naschy; Vinegar Syndrome Blu-ray Special Edition

  • CinemaRetro
By Hank Reineke

One of the more fascinating aspects of the Spanish horror film is that the country’s most famous exports were produced during the near forty year dictatorial regime of Falangist leader Generalissimo Francisco Franco. In interviews conducted following the passing of the repressive dictator in 1975, actor Paul Naschy (the so-called “Lon Chaney of Spanish horror”) often expressed bemusement regarding the restrictions imposed by Spanish censors on his films. Naschy’s horror films were (arguably, I suppose) of either very modest or completely non-political in their design - if not their subtext.

Paul Naschy (aka Jacinto Molina Alvarez) was greatly influenced by the celebrated cycle of gothic horror and mystery films produced by Universal Studios in the 1930s and 1940s. The primary difference between these monochrome films and those Naschy would lens beginning 1968 is unmistakable: most of his films, including the colorful Count Dracula’s Great Love (1971), owed
