Mere Paas Ma Hai

Out of all the characters that you will come across in an Indian film, one that you will rarely see go astray is a mother. That too, the hero’s mother. She is an entity that restrains him with no physical bounds, gives him strength like no other energy drink, drives him to lengths beyond imagination (all within 2.5 hours) and without her, teaches him lessons universities worldwide have yet to discover. From being a sari clad soap opera box drama queen to a sophisticated career driven business magnet, she has transformed in front of us but one thing remains. The positive energy one feels from our filmi “Ma”. It may be a scene or a song, but she is there and her love unconditional. Yes, there may be some stories that forget about her, yet there is no denying, our cinematic mothers have sometimes been the saving grace for our films.

Review: Student of the Year

Student Of The Year

Stars: Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, Rishi Kapoor, Kayoze Irani, Sana Saeed, Ram Kapoor | Written by Rensil D’Silva and Niranjan Iyengar | Directed by Karan Johar

The release of a Karan Johar film is always an event for Bollywood lovers. The man who gave us Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham probably has as many haters as he does hardcore fans (of which I am unashamedly one), but that doesn’t stop him from doing what he does best: making good old fashion, high budgeted, and overly glamorous Bollywood escapism.

The students of St. Teresa’s High School (a fictitious school, set in Dehradun) have only one goal: winning the Student of the Year trophy. To win they must excel in the 3 As – academics, arts and athletics. In return, they get a full scholarship to any Ivy League college they want. The

Student of the Year Movie Review

When I entered the cinema hall to sit down and watch Karan Johar’s latest directorial venture Student of the Year, I was completely taken aback by the fact that the room was almost full! This is especially since the film has three new and unheard of actor, Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt playing the leading roles. It led me to assume that it was most likely that everyone was here to witness what one of Bollywood’s most premier filmmakers has now constructed for us following the successful My Name is Khan (2010). It also reaffirmed for me that the audiences’ approach to Indian cinema had now transformed. They are now interested in the people behind the camera in addition to the people who are in front of it. Student of the Year does entertain you during its two and a half hour run, but there are certain
