‘Riviera’, ‘Bounty Hunters’ To Get Second Seasons At Sky

In an official press release, Sky has revealed that it has commissioned second seasons of Julia Stiles-led south of France crime series Riviera, as well as another run for Jack Whitehall’s Bounty Hunters. It also confirmed Gareth Evans’ Gangs Of London, which we reported news of yesterday and a total of 50 original series for broadcast in 2018.

24 of the 50 productions are returning shows, so says the broadcaster.

Following its phenomenal success earlier this year Sky’s best-performing original series to date, Riviera returns with Julia Stiles reprising the role of Georgina Clios for another high-octane series about the lives of the super-rich on the Côte d’Azur. Jack Whitehall’s comedy thriller Bounty Hunters is set to return for more action and adventure. And brand-new drama Gangs of London, a fresh and original gangland thriller, will take viewers on an adrenaline-fuelled journey into the hidden heart of the capital.

Rob Leane May 8, 2017

Audible’s Alien: River Of Pain expands the story of Aliens, giving us more Ripley and a deeper understanding of Hadley’ s Hope...

Alien: River Of Pain, the novel by Christopher Maggs, has been given a glossy audio drama adaptation by Dirk Maggs and the fine folks at Audible.

The story is set before and during the events of Aliens, offering further details about the Hadley’s Hope colony of Lv-426, what went wrong there, and how the decision was made to send Ripley, Burke, Bishop and the Colonial Marines to investigate.

A number of cast members from the film reprise their roles: William Hope as Lieutenant Gorman, Mac MacDonald as Colony Administrator Al Simpson, Stuart Milligan as the salvager that found Ripley drifting in deep space, and Alibe Parsons as Gateway Station’s med tech.

Alien: River Of Pain - introducing a tense audio drama; new trailer

Rob Leane Apr 27, 2017

We got a taster of Audible’s new drama, Alien: River Of Pain. Here’s the new trailer and what we thought...

On a grey afternoon in Greenwich, I trundled through a park and struggled up an incline to reach London’s Royal Observatory. I was lured into this physical exertion by the promise of canapés, drinks and sneak peek at Alien: River Of Pain, a new Audible drama that will bridge the gap between Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens.

After taking a second to catch my breath and immortalise the iconic London skyline with a half-arsed smartphone photo, I said my awkward hellos, stashed my belongings in a cloakroom and made my way into the event. As promised, bubbly was flowing and tiny nibbles were being circulated.

Staff carried snacks atop rectangular glass cases, which contained little black rocks. Space-y looking rocks.

Rob Leane Mar 30, 2017

Audible is releasing River Of Pain, an audiobook set between Alien and Aliens, in April....

Audible are getting in on the expanding-the-world-of-Alien game. The audiobook giants have a new project on the way (its second venture into the world of Alien), which will cover a different era to Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant film.

Covenant takes place after Prometheus but before Alien, while Audible's incoming audiobook is set after the original Alien but before James Cameron's Aliens.

Audible has put together an audio adaptation of Alien: River Of Pain, a 2014 novel by Christopher Golden.

Here's the official synopsis of the book, which explores the origins of Newt and what happened while Ripley was travelling back to Earth...

Inside No. 9 series 3 episode 2 review: The Bill

Louisa Mellor Feb 21, 2017

Inside No. 9 returns with a very fraught, very funny episode co-starring Philip Glenister and Jason Watkins. Spoilers ahead…

This review contains spoilers.

3.2 The Bill

“People arguing over a bill - how the hell are you going to keep that going for half an hour without becoming boring?” asked Inside No. 9’s Steve Pemberton here. He and writing partner Reece Shearsmith know full well how; by performing their show’s best trick and twisting the quotidian into lurid, unusual shapes.

The intrigue as to who’s conning who in The Bill motors us through the half-hour—this is Inside No. 9 so we know something’s up—but there’s plenty to admire on the way to our destination. Before it becomes a blood-bath and then an episode of Hustle, The Bill works as an entertaining look at passive aggression and competitiveness.

The dialogue fizzes along,

Inside No. 9 series 3: “We’re not sadists!”

Louisa Mellor Feb 14, 2017

Ace anthology series Inside No. 9 returns next week for its third run. Here’s what its creators had to say at the press launch…

Having made audiences wince at characters put through all manner of horrors—murder, suicide, demonic possession—sadism would seem a fair accusation to level at Inside No. 9’s creators. It doesn’t stand of course, because the show’s so good that it’s all pleasure and no pain. Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith don’t seek to make people suffer in writing the series. “I wouldn’t say that’s what we enjoy, we’re not sadists!” Pemberton laughs at the series three press launch. “For us, it’s all about the narrative and taking that half-hour we have for each episode and weaving the story that takes you on the biggest journey.”

Crazyhead: the teen demons taking over TV

Two women fight forces of evil on the mean streets of Britain in the new comedy horror from the maker of Misfits. He talks Twilight, zombie mermaids – and why all teens battle demons constantly

In the fast-moving world of television, zombies are very much “last season”. Currently it’s demons that are capturing the imagination of TV showrunners. This year alone we’ve been treated to hyper-violent comic-book adaptation Preacher, about a half-angelic, half-demonic man of the cloth battling evil forces in the deep South, and supernatural series Outcast, in which a drifter and a pastor exorcise possessed folk in rural America.

Both shows saw British actors in prominent roles (Dominic Cooper in Preacher, Philip Glenister in Outcast), but they were very much born in the USA, wrestling with those recurrent American themes of guns, god and free will. Now, though, comes a very British addition to the demon genre.
