SAG Awards Nominations Continue Strong Diversity Showing

SAG Awards Nominations Continue Strong Diversity Showing
Wednesday’s SAG Awards nominations showed plenty of diversity as the actors union continued supporting movies and television shows with multi-racial casts — as they have in recent awards seasons.

Dee Rees’ “Mudbound” scored nominations for ensemble cast and for Mary J. Blige in the supporting actress categories even though Netflix gave the Mississippi-based movie only a cursory theatrical release last month. Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” found plenty of traction with a cast nomination and a best actor nod for Daniel Kaluuya — even though the film opened 10 months ago.

The Big Sick,” based on Kumail Nanjiani’s true-life romance with his wife, took a cast nomination. And there were two surprise nominations in the supporting categories — Hong Chau for “Downsizing” and Denzel Washington for “Roman J. Israel Esq.” Washington won the 2016 SAG Best Actor category for “Fences.” Chau also received a Golden Globe nom for supporting actress.

On the television side, “Orange Is the New Black,” “[link

Thor: Ragnarok has surpassed Wonder Woman at the global box office

Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok has now moved past DC’s Wonder Woman at the global box office.

Much is said about the Marvel/DC rivalry, and while none of it really matters, it is certainly interesting to see how various superhero movies perform at the box office compared to one another.

Thor: Ragnarok has been doing particularly well in markets across the world, having pulled in $301 million in the Us and an impressive $833 million worldwide. Comparing this to past Thor films, Ragnarok looks even better, beating out Thor ($449 million) and Thor: The Dark World ($644 million) with considerable ease.

But it’s not just previous Thor movies that Ragnarok is besting, with the movie now surpassing the very popular Wonder Woman at the box office as well (via Box Office Mojo). The $833 million of Thor: Ragnarok has just edged it past Wonder Woman’s $821 million.

Wonder Woman, however, still has bragging rights at home,

The Dark Tower adaptation: what’s in it for the fans?

Dan Cooper Dec 13, 2017

Easter eggs, nods to the broader Stephen King world and more: we look again at The Dark Tower movie...

This feature contains major spoilers for both The Dark Tower movie and novels.

There’s an old adage in the film industry that you’ve probably come across if you’ve listened to enough podcasts or watched a few interviews with those in the business, a familiar nugget of received wisdom that most filmmakers will elicit, perhaps with a contemplative shrug, or maybe whilst wearing a pained grimace of world-wearied experience: nobody sets out to make a muddled movie. In the case of the eagerly-awaited Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower, there’s no arguing that like virtually all movie projects in existence (and perhaps even more than most), the genesis of this film was undoubtedly rooted in love.

So let's examine the adaptation process so that fans

Why 2017 was the year of Stephen King on screen

Ryan Lambie Dec 8, 2017

As The Dark Tower heads to disc, we take a look back at a screen year that's been big for Stephen King adaptations...

In the late 60s and early 1970s, a new generation of horror storytellers brought the genre out of the past and into the troubled, turbulent present. In cinemas, such directors as George A Romero, Tobe Hooper and David Cronenberg ushered in a new age of modern, fleshier horror, where the images were disturbing and the capes and castles of old Dracula and Frankenstein movies were entirely absent.

Over in the literary world, such writers as Ira Levin (Rosemary's Baby) and William Peter Batty (The Exorcist) were injecting creating a similarly seismic impact, sparking a pulp horror boom that would last until well into the 1980s. Few authors, however, have enjoyed the fame or the sheer longevity of Stephen King. Still in his 20s when his first novel,

Golden Globe 2017 Predictions: What Films Will Score Nominations?

Golden Globe 2017 Predictions: What Films Will Score Nominations?
The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. will reveal nominations for the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards on Monday. The 90-ish-member organization of international journalists makes a big splash every year with its boozed-up, televised ceremony that of late has a shot at making a real impact on the Oscar race, given that it airs in the thick of Academy voting. (Meryl Streep no doubt gained a few votes after her rousing anti-Trump remarks on last year’s telecast.)

This year the group is in a position to help cull the list of contenders further, after the Broadcast Film Critics Assn. once again found a way to recognize pretty much everything in contention. That said, bear in mind that this is a tight-knit group of press members whose picks are not necessarily indicative of the tastes of a nearly 8,000-person Academy of film professionals.

Case in point, last year’s big winner: “La La Land” walked away with a

Creator and writer of Luther, Neil Cross, had confirmed that season 5 was in the works earlier this year, and now, in an interview with Deadline, Cross has revealed that the new season will begin filming in January of 2018.

“I delivered the final episode of Luther series five about an hour before leaving for the airport [to head to London for the Hard Sun premiere]. Luther Season 5 To Film In January, Movie Still Being Discussed

Luther fans, rejoice! Idris Elba’s gruff detective will don that signature tweed coat once again for an “utterly heart-stopping and unmissable” four-part season, filming on which will kick off next month.

That’s right, Luther season 5 will head into production in January and it’ll herald John Luther’s first small-screen appearance since December of 2015.
