The “Godless” star joins Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo and Stephen Dorff in the HBO drama’s upcoming run that focuses on a macabre crime in the Ozarks. The third season spans several decades and is divided into three separate time periods. McNairy will play Tom, a father with connections to state police. Ali plays state police detective Wayne Hays; Dorff plays his partner Roland West; and Ejogo plays Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher.
The actor has joined the Season 3 ensemble as a father who suffers a terrible loss that ties his fate to that of two state police detectives, our sister site Deadline reports.

More casting news has trickled through for the third season of True Detective with Stephen Dorff landing a co-lead role opposite previously revealed names Mahershala Ali and Carmen Ejogo.

Dorff will play the role of the Arkansas State Investigator Roland West, the partner of Ali’s Wayne Hays who is a Northwest Arkansas state police detective. Ejogo will play Amelia Reardon, a school teacher with a connection to two missing children in 1980.

Dorff has had a long and varied career both on the big and small screens from Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere, John G. Avildsen’s The Power of One, Tarsem Singh’s Immortals, and comic book adaptation “Blade.
The third season will focus on a crime in the heart of the Ozarks, with the mystery playing out in three separate time periods. Ejogo will play an Arkansas schoolteacher with a connection to two missing children in the 80s. Ali is playing a character named Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas, with Dorff as his partner.
Series creator and producer Nic Pizzolatto is returning for the third season. He is the third season’s sole writer, though he co-wrote the fourth episode with David Milch. Pizzolatto will also make his directorial debut in the season with Jeremy Saulnier directing most of the season.
According to TV Line, Stephen Dorff is the latest addition to the cast which already includes the likes of Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and Carmen Ejogo (Star).
Dorff is set to play Roland West, a state investigator who is trying to bring a three-decades-long investigation to a close.
It was previously revealed that Ali was playing a state police detective named Wayne Hays and that Ejogo was on board to play a schoolteacher named Amelia Reardon.
HBO says that Season 3 “tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods."
Series creator Nic Pizzolatto will write and direct Season 3.
