Movie Review – Hotel of the Damned (2016)

Hotel of the Damned, 2016.

Directed by Bobby Barbacioru.

Starring Louis Mandylor, Peter Dobson, Bogdan Marhodin, Roxana Luca, Manuela Harabor, Natalia Mateut and Florin Kevorkian.

No use hanging up a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign here. After a car accident and stranded in the middle of nowhere, an ex-con and his daughter find themselves in an abandoned hotel, populated by sub-human cannibalistic creatures. Is it check-out time, already!?

What’s scary? These days it’s any time a vote of any kind comes up, but in terms of horror cinema, there’s plenty of reliable set ups one can use. How about locations? Well for one perhaps shoot and set your film in Romania. That’s a good start. Then perhaps have some sort of creepy abandoned building. If you can’t afford a Dracula-esque castle, how about an abandoned hotel or warehouse? Yeah, that’s good.

Hotel of the Damned uses just this set up,

Blu-Ray Review: The Frighteners – Early Confirmation of Peter Jackson’s Genius

It should always be counted a massive tragedy that Michael J Fox was robbed of the opportunity to make more films by his health, because he made some of the best family films of his generation, in the Back to the Future Trilogy, as well as other classics like Teen Wolf, The Secret of My Suce$s and Doc Hollywood. Okay, so not everything he touched was gold, but the actor who rescued Marty McFly from the evils of being ginger and unfunny (from Eric Stoltz of course) has such an easy charisma that even now when he appears in cameos and brief guest runs on TV (where his career trajectory has found comfort since 1996 and Spin City) it’s hard not to love him.

And just before he stopped making movies (aside from voice work for Stuart Little and Atlantis) the same year that Spin City arrived on the small screen,

'3-D sound' unveiled at L.A. theater

Hollywood -- A breakthrough in theatrical sound that is targeting digital 3-d-ready exhibition was introduced Tuesday at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers' Technical Conference and Exhibition.

Iosono, a spinoff company of Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology, excited Smpte delegates with an immersive "3-D sound" system, which uses technology developed at Fraunhofer.

Mann's Chinese 6 Theater in Hollywood unveiled the first installation of the system in a 3-d-ready commercial theater (it also houses a digital cinema projector and RealD 3-D system). The 3-D sound system at the Mann is a ring of 380 speakers, set six inches apart, around the wall of the auditorium.

Calling the technology a paradigm shift in sound, the Institute's director, Karlheinz Brandenburg -- one of the fathers of the MP3 format -- explained that the sound system uses "wavefield synthesis," which allows sound to envelop the audience. It can be used to play

When Major Leaguers Play Themselves: "Manhattan Merry-Go-Round"

  • IFC
By Matt Singer

In honor of the start of the 2008 baseball season, will be paying tribute to the national pastime's long relationship with the movies every day this week by giving you everything you'd ever want to know about the odd little quasi-autobiographical ditties in which baseball players have played themselves. Peanuts and crackerjacks not included.

"Manhattan Merry-Go-Round" (1937)

Directed by Charles Reisner

As Himself: Joe DiMaggio

Game Summary: This mostly tepid musical revolves around a bunch of mobsters who take over a record company and then use their muscle to convince a bunch of popular acts to play for them, which precipitates musical performances in the film from Gene Autry, Cab Calloway and Louis Prima, who actually performs on a working merry-go-round planted on the middle of a nightclub dance floor. DiMaggio's in the wrong place at the wrong time; he shows up late to a radio show
