Best Movies and TV to Stream in December: Sci-Fi Cops, Dave Chappelle and More
When historians look back at the cosmic coincidences that made up the annus miserablis that was 2017, they will likely skip over the fact Netflix released a movie named Bright and a German horror series titled Dark within mere days of one another. We, however, are happy to celebrate such a glorious irony right here and now. The streaming service is also dropping a pair of stand-up specials from heavyweight talents (and supposedly the new season of Black Mirror, which is scheduled for "late 2017" ... so, um, soon?). Meanwhile Amazon is keeping

Ayesha Dharker: ‘I try to talk directors out of casting me’

She ducks auditions, doesn’t call agents back and says she was upstaged by her outfit in Star Wars. Yet Ayesha Dharker has a career that spans everything from soaps to Shakespeare.

Near the end of our meal together, the actor Ayesha Dharker looks up from her plate and asks suddenly: “Why are you here? Why are you interviewing me?” Well, I tell her, there can’t be too many actors whose careers incorporate Shakespeare, Coronation Street, Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Star Wars, as hers does. That’s got to be noteworthy. She looks sceptical. But then she takes everything, even her work, with a pinch of salt. “I normally try to talk directors out of casting me. I like going up for things but I don’t always intend to do them. I’ll tell them what a terrible mistake they’d make if they cast me.” Do they listen?

Doctor Who complete reviews: Planet of the Ood

I guess it was only a matter of time before the Ood came back for another tussle with The Doctor. They had proven to be a big success in David Tennant's first season, thanks to their strikingly unusual appearance and the mystery of whether they were goodies or baddies. In the end, they got a rather sad exit in The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, after they were killed in explosions, having been possessed by the Beast. Even The Doctor couldn't save them this time, the scoundrel.

So he figures that he owes them one after arriving on the Planet Of The Ood. We'd seen how they were no more than shuffling servants to human beings in the far future, serving up drinks and food like badly mutated butlers. The concept of Ood slavery was briefly mentioned, but it's dwelt upon more heavily in Planet Of The Ood – which incidentally,

Film: ‘Red Alert: The War Within’; Director: Anant Mahadevan; Cast: Suniel Shetty, Sameera Reddy, Ashish Vidyarthi, Vinod Khanna, Seema Biswas, Ayesha Dharker, Bhagyashree; Rating: *** and 1/2

Arundhati Roy called their fight the single greatest resistance against oppression in the world, while our prime minister, the deceptively genial Manmohan Singh, called them the greatest internal security threat. Films like Red Alert should be made: Suniel Shetty

As an actor, Suniel Shetty is ecstatic about the new and exciting phase in his career. The fact that his realistic Red Alert - The War Within comes after a riotous comedy like De Dana Dan and a family drama like Tum Milo To Sahi tells a lot about different roles that are coming his way. Add to that the fact that a few months back, Red Alert fetched him an award for the Best Actor at New York's South Asian International Film Festival is something that excites him even more."It's a major shot in the arm when international award and recognition comes in. Suddenly, it starts seeming that you are working in just the right projects. It is ironical though that a foreign country had to come and recognize my talent", he says."Icing on the cake is when you working on different kind of films at the same time.

Goldy Notay to miss her Bollywood premiere
She’s the 46th Brit-Asian actor to debut in an Indian-co-production. She’s preceded by actors like Ben Kingsley, Ayesha Dharker, Parminder Nagra and Dev Patel. Few know that she was actually seen as a journalist in London Dreams and shared screen space with Salman Khan. Goldy Notay, who looks rather bloated in her debut movie, Gurinder Chadha’s It’s A Wonderful Afterlife (Hai Marjawah! in Hindi), will however miss her Bollywood premiere. She admits that she landed her second film, Sex And The City –2, with the weight she had put on for playing Roopie in Chadha’s fifth film as director. And it’s ...

[DVD Review] Loins of Punjab Presents

Loins of Punjab Presents is a mockumentary patterned after the formula of Christopher Guest - a variety of could-have-beens and wannabe butt heads in a contest of talent, but more importantly, of self-worth and vindication, in which seemingly average non-creative types pit themselves (and each other) against steep odds and go to surprising lengths to get something that most people wouldn’t even think of applying for. In this case, the object of the game is the Loins of Punjab Bollywood-style singing contest, sponsored by Mr. Bokade (Jameel Khan), who is bringing all of this to fruition courtesy of his outrageous pork fortune. As a portrait of Indian-American culture and people who aren’t as talented as they wish they were, Loins is surprisingly sharp in its politics and perspective on the difficulties of maintaining cultural identity in a rapidly shifting world. It's too bad it doesn’t work better as a film.
