Frank The Bastard Review

Frank The Bastard? Try again. Maybe a more apt title would be Frank The Underwhelming? Frank The Undercooked? Frank The Utterly Lifeless Cinematic Endeavor?

The actual title of Brad Coley’s weightless drifter story suggests a rural nightmare akin to something more sinister. I’m not saying such a title suggests Jeepers Creepers material, but as far as bastards go, Frank is no Yellow Bastard (Sin City). Hell – he’s not even Fat Bastard from Austin Powers. Frank is a fraudulent foe in the face of Coley’s familial fiasco (holy eff), and the whole thing comes together like a mysterious fable told by your absent-minded granny. This one’s more like a bedtime story, lulling viewers to sleep with a particularly uninteresting “mystery.”

It all starts when a divorced city girl named Clair (Rachel Miner) heads home to Edgeport, Maine, determined to uncover the truth about her mother’s unfortunate death.

Film Review: ‘Frank the Bastard’

Film Review: ‘Frank the Bastard’
Like sands through the hourglass, the soap-operatic thriller “Frank the Bastard” drizzles out tiny tidbits of expository information scene-by scene throughout its nearly two hour running time, and when it’s done, one is left with little more than an awareness that a unit of time has elapsed. A Nor’easter Gothic with a strong sense for its coastal Maine setting, but little understanding of how to draw the viewer into a convoluted mystery involving broadly drawn motivations and thinly sketched characters, Brad Coley’s slow-paced, overstuffed genre piece offers a decent cast, but should nonetheless struggle to do much business beyond VOD.

We’re first introduced to 33-year-old New Yorker Clair (Rachel Miner) as she suffers a debilitating panic attack just as she’s finalizing her divorce. Later that night, Clair turns to her free-spirited best friend Isolda (Shamika Cotton) for consolation, and she rather improbably suggests that the

DVD News: Animals (UK/R2)

Chelsea Films have announced the UK DVD release of Animals, based on the best-selling 1992 novel by John Skipp and Craig Spector – who co-scripted A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child and are regarded by many as key pioneers of the late-1980s literary splatterpunk movement.

Directed by Douglas Aarniokoski (Highlander: Endgame) from a script adapted by Spector and starring Marc Blucas (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Naveen Andrews (Lost), Nicki Aycox (Supernatural) and Eva Amurri (Californication), this graphically violent and boldly erotic reinvention of the werewolf/shapeshifter mythos will certainly appeal to horror fans who prefer the mature content of True Blood to the toothless, juvenile shenanigans of the Twilight saga.

Ever since his dreams of a promising football career were shattered by an unexpected injury in college, one-time local hero Jarrett (Blucas) has spent the subsequent years wasting away in his rapidly dying hometown working days in a variety of dead-end,

Toronto books 'Passage' for Discovery

Toronto books 'Passage' for Discovery
TORONTO -- Mark Heller's Moroccan thriller "The Passage" and David Ross' "The Babysitters" are to unspool next month at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of its Discovery program, organizers said Thursday.

The low-budget "Passage" features Stephen Dorff as an American experiencing a near-fatal forbidden romance in Morocco with a local woman played by Sarai Givaty.

David Ross is making his directorial debut with "The Babysitters", a drama he wrote about a 16-year-old girl (Katherine Waterston) who turns her babysitting service into a call-girl ring for married men after starting an affair with a customer. John Leguizamo, Cynthia Nixon, Denis O'Hare and Andy Comeau round out the cast.

Festival co-director Noah Cowan said both "Passage" and "Babysitters" are certain to strike a chord with buyers in Toronto as will "The World Unseen", a British-South African co-production from Shamim Sarif that stars Lisa Ray ("Water") and is set in 1950's South Africa.

"Among the Discovery films this year, there are films that will introduce the world to some of the most significant talent in cinema over the next 10 years," Cowan said, adding that the sidebar will have art house and commercially minded films for distributors.
