'People are thirsty for something new': the shows shaking up Scandi-noir at last

Norway has been the outlier in the Scandinavian TV phenomenon – until now, thanks to new dramas that ditch the stereotypical snowy murders for adolescent sex and sewer dwellers

A fog cloaks Oslo, so thick and impenetrable that every pedestrian becomes a looming shadowy spectre as they pace the icy pavements. They’re not actually doing anything suspicious – shopping, going to work, cautiously jogging – but thanks to endless exposure to the TV phenomenon that is Scandinavian noir, it’s hard not to think that everyone is a tortured detective or hiding a grisly secret.

Yet while Danish and Swedish dramas have had their grip over British audiences for several years now, Norway’s contribution to the Nordic noir obsession has been somewhat muted up till now. As Nicolai Cleve Broch, one of Norway’s most successful actors, says: “Norway has always been like the kid brother in the relationship between Denmark and Sweden.

The Killing is long gone, Borgen is done, and the last foreign drama to really capture the imagination of the British public - Channel 4's French spooker The Returned - won't be back on our screens until at least 2016.

So is our fascination with foreign fare over with - or could another international series be about to break through? Digital Spy takes a look at 8 contenders:

1. Deutschland '83

Where's it from? Germany.

What's it about? Martin Rauch (Jonas Nay) is wrenched from the world he knows and sent to the West as an undercover Stasi spy at the height of the Cold War. Hiding in plain sight in the West German army, he must gather the secrets of Nato military strategy.

Could it be a hit in the UK? Talks with Brit broadcasters are currently ongoing, but a big factor here could be the news that Deutschland '83 is

Fantastic Fest Review: Ragnarok

  • Slackerwood
In 1904, Norwegian archaeologist Haakon Shetelig and Swedish archaeologist Gabriel Gustafson excavated one of the greatest discoveries of the Viking Age -- a burial mound located on the Oseberg farm near Tornberg, Norway, containing a well-preserved ship, grave goods and the skeletal remains of two women. The quality and abundance of items within the grave indicate that at least one of the interred was a woman of high status, and it has been suggested that she was the legendary Norwegian Queen Asa.

Norwegian director Mikkel Brænne Sandemose couples this archaeological find with the Norse myth of the end of the world's events in his action/adventure Ragnarok, which premiered at Fantastic Fest. This family-friendly film pays homage to blockbusters such as Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Goonies without the overdone Hollywood gloss. Don't get me wrong -- the movie includes plenty of long shots of sweeping landscapes with a majestic musical score to match,
