Halloween 2017: Hack, Slash, Stream: 13 Slashers to Watch on Shudder

  • DailyDead
Of all the many sub-genres in horror, the slasher is probably my favorite. There aren’t many good ones, but even the bad ones tend to deliver exactly what we want from the formula. They’re horror movie comfort food, and Shudder is offering an entire buffet this October.

Black Christmas (1973, dir. Bob Clark) In many ways the first modern slasher film, Bob Clark’s holiday horror movie is, to this day, a genre masterpiece. From its chilly Canadian atmosphere to the disturbing obscene phone calls being made to a sorority house, Black Christmas is brilliantly constructed and hugely influential. It’s not just one of my favorite slasher movies, but one of my favorite horror movies of any type, full stop.

Blood Rage (1987, dir. Bruce Rubin) There are slasher movies that are tense and scary and stylish. Blood Rage is not one of them. Shot in 1983 but not released

Re-animator – The Blu Review

Review by Roger Carpenter

Earlier this summer I wrote a review for Arrow’s release of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. I didn’t review the film itself because I assumed the readers who might click on the review already knew the film well and were mostly concerned with whether or not it was worth picking up another copy of the film. I’m going to make the same assumption about Re-Animator, perhaps the only film in the history of cinema to ask the MPAA to surrender its R-rating so it could be released in unrated form (actually, re-released).

The film itself is a horror-comedy classic based on one of H.P. Lovecraft’s lesser known works entitled Herbert West: Re-Animator. At the time of its theatrical release it was considered cutting edge in the area of gore as well as altogether outrageousness. I suspect Lovecraft, who was so adept

Blu-ray

Arrow

1985 / 1:85 / Street Date August 8, 2017

Starring: Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton

Cinematography: Mac Ahlberg

Film Editor: Lee Percy

Written by Stuart Gordon, Dennis Paoli, William Norris

Produced by Brian Yuzna

Music: Richard Band

Directed by Stuart Gordon

Released in 1985, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator remains the grandest of Grand Guignols, a viscerally entertaining comedy that is just grindhouse enough for fans of Blood Feast and arthouse enough for connoisseurs of Francis Bacon’s more grisly canvases.

Originally scripted for Chicago’s Organic Theater Company by Gordon and co-writers Dennis Paoli and William Norris, Re-Animator was based on H. P. Lovecraft’s short story, Herbert West – Re-Animator, first published in 1922. Set in the blandly generic college town of Arkham, Massachusetts, the action revolves in and around the classrooms of stately Miskatonic University’s medical school and the sterilized atmosphere of the academy’s dank morgue evoked so well by Mac Ahlberg’s lush cinematography.

Horror Highlights: Watch the Short Film The Hopping Dead, Metalstorm Blu-ray, Prometheus: Life And Death #3

Created as part of Justin Lin’s Yomfyom contest, Jimmy Lui’s (of Black Mast Studios) The Hopping Dead aims to terrify its audience to the bone. Read on for more details and to watch the short film in its entirety. Also in today’s Highlights: Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn Blu-ray release details as well as preview pages and cover artwork for Prometheus: Life and Death #3.

Watch Jimmy Lui’s Short Film The Hopping Dead: “The film was shot for Justin Lin’s Yomfyom filmmakers competition. It’s an homage to cult John Carpenter films like “Big Trouble in Little China and “They Live.” There’s also a nod to the classic old martial arts films featuring Sammo Hung. Lin’s competition had 2 rules. The film had to be less than 3 minutes running time and we could only use 4 lines of pre-selected dialogue — other than that there were no stipulations.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume Xxxv Review

Brad Cook reviews Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume Xxxv…

Shout! Factory’s track record with MST3K sets has been pretty solid ever since they took over the license from Rhino. They’ve done a great job of including bonus features in every four-disc volume, along with four mini-posters based on the disc case covers. Some sets are more memorable than others, of course, such as the one where they included all the Gamera movies they skewered, or the volume that celebrated the show’s 25th anniversary, with an excellent retrospective documentary (both came in nice tin cases too).

Volume Xxxv is a set that falls in the “good” category. If you’re a completist, there’s nothing stopping you from snapping it up. If not, you’ll want to read this review and decide for yourself. As always, of course, the episodes live up to the series’ typical standard of excellence.

Bluray Review: Troll/Troll 2/Best Worst Movie

Oh Scream Factory, how I love thee. Growing up, I was exposed to quite a few films that left a mark on me. Everything from Hellraiser and A Nightmare On Elm Street, to Charles Band’s Empire Pictures classics such as Eliminators, From Beyond and Prison. One of the films that fell into the Empire Pictures group was a silly and incredibly easy to love family horror film called Troll. Watching that film for the first time (after finally getting past the VHS cover art that scared the living crap out of me) was an experience I will never forget. Everything from that weird ass song to Sonny Bono’s portrayal of what is the most unappealing swinger of all time, the film just had me right away. It was my jam all throughout childhood, and though there have been DVD releases of the John Carl Buechler monster film, it
