Film Review: ‘Awaken the Shadowman’

Film Review: ‘Awaken the Shadowman’
A slow burn of a horror drama that doesn’t build toward quite enough of a blaze to be truly memorable, “Awaken the Shadowman” nonetheless ranks a cut above the genre norm for its atmospheric and confident setup. This debut feature for director “J.S. Wilson” (actually a pseudonym for the three scenarist-producers, two of whom are also the male leads) finds estranged brothers reunited over their mother’s disappearance, but increasingly troubled even more by weird goings-on in the town where they grew up. Some horror fans will decry the lack of gore — or even much violence — here. More discerning ones, however, may just lament that a film with such a strong first two-thirds grows rushed and underwhelming in the last lap.

After a brief prologue depicting an imperiled young woman and baby in 1964 Connecticut, we meet present-day protagonist Adam (James Zimbardi), a Redding, Calif. construction worker struggling to meet the needs of his small family — to

Emmy Contenders 2017: Supporting Actress in a Drama
New blood is bound to infuse the category this year as four of last year’s nominees (including winner Maggie Smith of “Downton Abbey”) are ineligible. Smith’s show came to an end, and the three other nominees were for “Game of Thrones,” a series that returns in July, thus missing the deadline for 2017. That’s good news for two of last year’s nominees, Maura Tierney (“The Affair”) and Constance Zimmer (“UnReal”), who could repeat this year. It also opens the door for previous winner Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”) to return, along with Margo Martindale, who won in the guest category last year on “The Americans” and has been promoted to supporting this year. But there are several new shows to consider, and many introduced brand new faces we’ve come to love. Two virtual unknowns won our hearts in the past year: Millie Bobby Brown on “Stranger Things” and Chrissy Metz on

‘Fargo’ Cast Talks Season 3 Challenges (and Fun) at Fyc Event
Television Academy voters got a fun surprise with the appearance of Damon Lindelof as the moderator of the “Fargo” Fyc panel Thursday night, which makes sense as his HBO drama “The Leftovers” shares DNA with actress Carrie Coon. She stars in both FX’s “Fargo” and the current season of “The Leftovers.” The Fyc panel consisted of show creator Noah Hawley, cast members Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Olivia Sandoval, and Coon, executive producer Warren Littlefield, and director John Cameron.

Fargo” has the high-class problem of trying to top itself with each successive season and Hawley shared how Season 3 took shape. “I took a nap. I’m not joking. 'Fargo' Season 3: Noah Hawley and Cast on Sex, Lies and Stamp Collections
Most showrunners have their own particular ways of coming up with storylines or charting full seasons for returning series. For Noah Hawley, the process usually starts with taking a nap. "It's kind of always been like this," he says sheepishly, calling in from a chilly set in Calgary, Alberta. "I mean, what became Fargo started when I lied down one afternoon while I was writing and dreamed about two men, one civilized and one not, meeting in an emergency room. For the second season, same thing – only it was a
