David Lynch’s Festival of Disruption Unites ‘Peaks’ Cultists in Meditation Talk and Musical Mayhem

David Lynch’s Festival of Disruption Unites ‘Peaks’ Cultists in Meditation Talk and Musical Mayhem
“It’s a world out there that is horribly stressed,” said Bob Roth, the well-known transcendental meditation (Tm) teacher, providing some remarks at a two-day festival designed to raise money for David Lynch’s Tm-promoting charitable foundation. And then, as part of their effort to bring tranquility to the world, they showed “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me,” verifiably the most stressful movie ever made.

This was not your grandfather’s Tm festival. Lynch’s second annual Festival of Disruption, held over two days at the Theatre at Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, drew some in solidarity with the higher-consciousness cause, others were there just for the musical acts — which also included Bon Iver, TV on the Radio, Sharon Von Etten, and Laura Marling — and more had traveled from around the globe just to get their “Twin Peaks” fandom on with Lynch, who was greeted at least as warmly as a Buddha in a Sunday afternoon Q&A.

‘I’m Sorry’ Review: A Sweet and Filthy Tribute to the Messiness of Being a Constant Comedian
Andrea and Mike aren’t perfect parents, but they’re trying. Maybe a little too hard at times. Such is the joy of “I’m Sorry,” the new TruTV series from writer/producer Andrea Savage, who stars as a dramatized version of herself, navigating life in La as a working comedian.

“I’m Sorry” follows Andrea on the everyday journey through a very specific La parenting world. With husband Mike (Tom Everett Scott) and a preschool-aged daughter Amelia (Olive Petrucci), Andrea navigates a world where preschool birthday parties can occasionally dovetail with unexpected conversations about the careers of adult film stars. Andrea the character is a comedy writer, and her penchant for joking her way out of awkward situations frequently catches the disapproving eyes of fellow parents.

Annecy: ‘Lu Over The Wall,’ ‘Loving Vincent’ Take Top Honors at Annecy Animation Festival

Annecy: ‘Lu Over The Wall,’ ‘Loving Vincent’ Take Top Honors at Annecy Animation Festival
French and Japanese animation left little room for anyone else, outside of Vincent Van Gogh, on the roll call of award-winning features at this year’s Annecy Animation Festival. Par for the course, the top honors at the festival highlighted strong films and filmmakers, though at least one of the fest’s most talked-about features left empty-handed.

Taking home Annecy’s top Cristal award for a feature was Japanese 2D movie “Lu Over the Wall.” Masaaki Yuasa’s was something of a surprise given the film’s relative low profile in Annecy compared to some other competition contenders. Animated feature turns on a middle-school student who meets a mermaid. It marks the first animated film based on an original story from Yuasa (“Ping Pong”).

The Jury Award for a feature film went to another Japanese film, “In This Corner of the World,” directed by Sunao Katabuchi. In her review of the film,

10 Most Wtf Things We Learned From Oliver Stone's Putin Interviews
What's the Russian equivalent of Kool-Aid? Whatever it is, it's definitely red – and Oliver Stone has eagerly drunk it down. The trailers for The Putin Interviews, Showtime's four-part series documenting a series of conversations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Stone, would have you believe that you're going to hear some pretty hard-hitting stuff as the autocrat and the filmmaker face off, Frost-Nixon style. What we got instead was a series of softballs lobbed lovingly in the direction of one of the most powerful and dangerous men in the world.

A History Of Violence: A new action franchise is Bourne

  • The AV Club
With A History Of Violence, Tom Breihan picks the most important action movie of every year, starting with the genre’s birth and moving right up to whatever Vin Diesel’s doing this very minute.

The Bourne Identity (2002)

It’s one of our great action-movie traditions, right up there with the moment that 007, in the middle of the circle, turns and shoots the camera while the John Barry theme plays. Jason Bourne, harassed and hunted by the forces of the government that he once served, shakes his attackers, discredits their bosses, and does a final awesome thing. And at the final moment, John Powell’s tense, jittery score fades into the staccato synth-stabs of Moby’s “Extreme Ways”—a song that, in any non-Bourne capacity, sucks real bad. It always works. You always get that little tingle, that fuck yeah, he did it again feeling. The quality ...

Gravitas Ventures Buys Documentary ‘Kim Dotcom: Caught in the Web’
Gravitas Ventures has secured U.S. as well as the foreign sales rights to territories outside North America for the documentary “Kim Dotcom: Caught in the Web,” which follows the notorious internet hacker, Variety has learned exclusively.

Gravitas announced the deal on Tuesday on the eve of the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, where it will be selling international rights.

Dotcom was born Kim Schmitz in Germany and moved to New Zealand with his family in 2012. Dotcom was raided and arrested by the New Zealand police that year and has been fighting extradition to the U.S. ever since. Charges against him include copyright infringement, racketeering, conspiracy, fraud, and money laundering as he and three co-defendants could face up to 80 years in prison.

Dotcom maintains that his Megaupload platform was merely providing a service, and under current copyright law, he is not responsible for the actions of its millions of users.

Jimmy Kimmel Probes Sean Spicer's Inner Voice During Hitler Comment
One day after White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer compared Adolf Hitler favorably to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during a briefing, Jimmy Kimmel Live! allowed viewers to hear what must have been running through his mind in that moment.

"Oh no, did I just defend Hitler? Hitler? I think I did! Why did I even do that? Why even bring up the Holocaust? At press secretary school, the one rule was 'Never Defend Hitler!'"

Kimmel introduced the hilarious segment by explaining the now-infamous blunder, which happened to fall during Passover.
