Ash Vs. Evil Dead Season 3 Review

Five episodes were provided for review.

When Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell first worked together on The Evil Dead, no one could have anticipated that this 1981 splatter-fest would snowball into not only a cult classic but one of the pillars of modern horror cinema. For decades after the trilogy’s final installment in 1992’s Army of Darkness, fans clamored for more of Campbell’s buffoonish badass Ashley J. Williams. After Raimi and Campbell helped shepherd director Fede Alvarez’s 2013 reboot/remake, hopes for more of their original vision seemed bleak. Then Ash vs. Evil Dead happened.

Since 2015, Campbell has reprised his titular role for the Starz series, giving an older but decidedly not wiser Ash a whole mess of gory shenanigans to get into. Now returning for season 3, the series complicates matters further, introducing a teenage daughter (Arielle Carver-o’Neill) Ash has never met and forcing him to become the reluctant hero once again.

Ash vs. Evil Dead Celebrates Ash Wednesday With New Action Figure

Ash vs. Evil Dead is celebrating Ash Wednesday with a look at the new Ash Williams action figure based on the blood-spattered TV series. In 2015, about 23 years after the release of Army of Darkness, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) returned to his Deadite-slaying ways with Ash vs. Evil Dead, marking the long-awaited return of the cult horror movie antihero. Presented in a 10-part, unrated series on Starz, the show quickly reacquainted fans of the excessive blood, guts and goop of the original Evil Dead movie trilogy and added a pair of ass-kicking cohorts named Kelly and Pablo (Dana DeLorenzo and Ray Santiago) to help Ash take on Ruby (Lucy Lawless), a new agent of evil.

Ash Vs. Evil Dead Gets a Groovy "Don't Think, Drink Shemps" Promo Spot

Shemps--the sexiest beer around.

Starz has released a groovy new promo spot for Ash Vs. Evil Dead, which is basically an advertisement promoting the fictional "Shemps Beer" brand. I absolutely love this insane gore-filled series and I can't wait for Season 3!

Shemps beer is named after Shemp Howard, one of the three stooges. During the production of one of their films, Shemp passed away and to finish the film, the production team had to use stand-ins and voiceovers to finish it. The early Evil Dead films incorporated the same kind of filmmaking tactics because they were making their films on a shoe-string budget. So, they had several people on the production taking on dual roles, which led to a variety of "Shemp" credits in the finished film. And that's how Shemps beer got its name!

The third season finds Ash, having gone from murderous urban legend to humanity-saving hometown hero,

They’ve Got the Look: Inspiration for Sci-Fi Characters

  • Cinelinx
Some of the most famous and popular science fiction characters in modern times were visually inspired by earlier creations or even real people. Cinelinx takes a look at five well-known sci-fi characters and what motivated their appearances.

While these five characters had various inspirations for their personalities and purpose, their specific looks have a clear precedent.

The Joker was based on Gwynplaine from The Man Who Laughs: When Bob Kane needed to come up with the iconic look of the Batman’s soon-to-be arch nemesis, he took inspiration from the 1928 silent film The Man Who Laughs, starring Conrad Veidt. For those unfamiliar with Veidt, he played the first-ever film zombie in the silent classic The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari (1920), and was also Jaffar in the live-action adaptation of Aladdin, called The Thief of Bagdad (1940). The film tells the story of Gwynplaine, the son of an executed 17th century nobleman,

Ash Is The Hero In New Ash Vs. Evil Dead Season 3 Pic

The second season of Ash vs. Evil Dead ended with Ash being celebrated as a hero of Elk Grove. Naturally, this will carry over into the upcoming third season, which will be with us early next year.

Unfortunately, Starz hasn’t given us much to feast on just yet, but a new image has been released today (seen above) courtesy of TV Insider along with a quote from Bruce Campbell himself, who explains what Ash has been up to since we last saw him.

“Ash—like any shallow person—is determined to cash in on his fame. [Ash is] revving up the crowd at the grand opening of Ashy Slashy’s Hardware (and Sex Toy) Emporium.”

If there were ever a business for Ash, I don’t think it could get any more accurate than that. This also goes to show just how much his character has developed over the course of the show.

Celebrate Halloween In Style With Groovy, Nsfw First Teaser For Ash Vs. Evil Dead Season 3

Well, Bruce Campbell did promise a jaw-dropping third season.

In honor of Halloween, Starz has today unleashed the groovy, decidedly Nsfw first teaser for Ash Vs. Evil Dead, which sadly won’t return until February of next year – a first for the horror sequel series, given previous instalments have dropped in the fall. The good news is that Ash Williams (Campbell) hasn’t lost his knack for slaying Deadites in the most gruesome ways imaginable, and above you’ll see our zombie-killing hero reunite with his long-lost daughter.

What follows is a gory, blood-drenched descent into madness, and while ratings slumped mid-way through season 2, all signs point to Ash Vs. Evil Dead firing on all cylinders in time for 2018. Behind the scenes, Sam Raimi still holds an executive producer credit on the horror-themed spinoff, though Starz’s series has now been placed in the hands of showrunner Craig Digregorio.

Critics Pick the Best Scripted Sports Shows Ever — IndieWire Survey

Critics Pick the Best Scripted Sports Shows Ever — IndieWire Survey
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: Which is your favorite scripted TV show about sports? Old and current shows are fair game.

June Thomas (@junethomas), Slate

I was a big fan of the Freeform show “Make It or Break It,” about the lives of a group of elite gymnasts working toward their dream of competing in the Olympics. Even typing that sentence, I know how hokey it sounds, and yes, it touched on all the clichés about women’s gymnastics – eating disorders, overburdened parents, inappropriate relationships with coaches – but you know what, all those things bubble up in the real sport with depressing regularity.

The show had more than its fair share

Bruce Campbell Has Some Choice Words For Those Who Pirate Ash Vs. Evil Dead

Game of Thrones may be the most-pirated television show in the land – season 7 alone was reportedly pirated over a billion times – but it’s not the only one to fall prey to illegal torrents.

Take Ash Vs. Evil Dead as an example. The cult horror series, which began life as a sequel to Sam Raimi’s iconic trilogy, chronicles the post-apocalyptic journey of Ash Williams, who hasn’t lost his appetite for slaughtering Deadites left, right, and center, even on the wrong side of 50.

And though Starz’s Ash Vs. Evil Dead has carved out an audience to call its own, particularly as that audience braces for the oncoming third season, Bruce Campbell (Williams) has gone on record to criticize those who seek out new episodes via illicit channels. The actor, who is known for his signature sarcasm, voiced his frustration during a recent book signing in Sacramento (via 1428 Elm
