‘Legion’ Review: Noah Hawley Crafts the Most Intricate, Intimate Superhero Story To Date

‘Legion’ Review: Noah Hawley Crafts the Most Intricate, Intimate Superhero Story To Date
Mutants, superheroes, and mind control — these are all familiar terms to anyone keeping up with the Marvel cinematic universe. Yet while such topics remain germane to “Legion,” Noah Hawley’s second serialized creation for FX, they don’t apply the way you might think. A bald man in a wheelchair touting tolerance is nowhere to be found. Nor should you expect to see too many spandex suits or adamantium claws. And while these well-known figures are out of sight and out of mind, it’s only because “Legion” is focused on creating a private universe within a mind of its own; one far more intricate, intimate, and courageous than any that have come before.

Starring Dan Stevens (“Downton Abbey,” “The Guest”) as David Heller, a tortured mental patient torn between believing he’s a paranoid schizophrenic plagued with false visions or a powerful telekinetic who hears voices that are all too real,

Doc ‘Steve McQueen’ Digs Into Troubled ‘Le Mans’ Production

Doc ‘Steve McQueen’ Digs Into Troubled ‘Le Mans’ Production
In the documentary “Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans,” about the making of McQueen’s passion project “Le Mans” — a dynamically filmed but dramatically inert racing saga released in 1971 to tepid reviews and middling business — the actor-producer is likened to Icarus, the mythical figure with wax wings who flies too close to the sun.

It’s the kind of hubris suffered by many superstars over the course of Hollywood history, including McQueen’s contemporary, Marlon Brando, whose 1961 Western that he directed and his company produced, “One-Eyed Jacks,” which, like “Le Mans,” went over schedule and over budget, and sunk the method actor’s designs to be a filmmaker in charge of his own projects; while McQueen’s spiritual offspring, Kevin Costner, suffered his own Waterloo with “Waterworld,” the 1995 flop he produced that was also plagued by cost overruns and filming setbacks.

Like Costner at the time of “Waterworld,” McQueen

1: Life on the Limit review: Illuminating but incomplete history of F1

Director: Paul Crowder; Writer: Mark Monroe; Narrator: Michael Fassbender; Running time: 112 mins; Certificate: 12A

1: Life on the Limit may be a veritable who's who of Formula 1 - featuring contributions from world drivers' champions such as John Surtees, Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher, Jody Scheckter, Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel to name but a few - but it's really the story of two men, Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley.

It's easy to be cynical about both Bernie and Max - particularly when you think about some of the things they've hit headlines for away from the track. But 1 - which uses the tension between speed and safety as its angle - sheds light on their determination to improve safety that some younger followers of motorsport - this writer included - may not have fully appreciated. Both Ecclestone and especially Mosley are

Space is awesome. Take it from me, a guy who went to Space Camp and really considered being an astronaut until I realized how much of my life I’d have to dedicate to studying high science and fitness only to have a slight chance at…nope, we cancelled Nasa Space Flights. So not only does Alfonzo

Britney Spears’ “Perfume” Video Review: Sweet Scent of Success?

Every time Britney Spears gets another chance to deliver a great music video, I think, “Well! Isn’t This the story of a girl named Lucky?”

But the “Work B**ch” gurgler, who’s definitely given us some great videos over these 15 years, did the right thing in reuniting with Joseph Kahn for her new clip “Perfume.” After all, he’s the man who helmed the vids for “Stronger,” “Womanizer,” and “Toxic,” and those are easily three of Brit’s finest cinematic spectacles. But did the reunion work out? Kahn has taken to Twitter in a huff noting that the original “Perfume” video was supposed to be much darker than the one released today, but I’m assuming Britney’s handlers/managers/keepers nixed what looks like gunplay in it. Too bad, since Kahn claims Spears gives a “game-changing performance” in it. And Uta Hagen sniffed.

But hey, guess what?

We have an exclusive clip that features footage from Niki Lauda's horrific 1976 crash, along with interviews from other Formula 1 drivers who were there that day. The documentary, narrated by Michael Fassbender, is available on iTunes and On Demand starting today, October 1.

1 is an action documentary showcasing the glamour, speed, danger and excitement of Formula One Grand Prix racing. Narrated by Michael Fassbender, the film tells the story of the golden age of Formula 1, when the sport became terrifyingly dangerous. In the late 1960s, Formula 1 cars doubled their engine size and sprouted wings, making them incredibly quick, but even more hazardous. With money pouring in from sponsorship and a new worldwide television audience, superstar drivers were born, thrown like gladiators into the ring.

Rush Review [Tiff 2013]

I absolutely love how Ron Howard can direct a film like The Dilemma, which wasn’t exactly adored by critics, but then bounce back without batting an eye.

As if seeing Howard’s comedic role in this year’s re-launch of Arrested Development wasn’t enough, his newest directorial effort, Rush, is a magnificent, fast-paced thrill ride wrapped around an intriguing true story. I’m no Formula 1 enthusiast, with my knowledge not reaching far past the name Mario Andretti, but Howard’s focused vision paired with Peter Morgan’s deliciously interesting screenplay opened a world full of adrenaline junkies and pride validation, also laying strong groundwork for stars Daniel Brühl and Chris Hemsworth. Rush is a fast and furious biopic that exposes two very different approaches to the world of high-speed racing, one that’s both informative and undeniably enjoyable, providing another remarkable highlight on Ron Howard’s resume.

Telling
