But despite becoming the highest-paid female filmmaker ever, Jenkins never really saw herself as a barricade stormer.

Listen to this week’s episode of “Playback” below. New episodes air every Thursday.

“I think because my mother was, I thought that was really behind us,” Jenkins, who likes to consider herself a “last wave feminist,” says. “I wasn’t thinking about, ‘And then I could be the first woman who…’ Nothing I’ve done

Spike Lee, On Fire: An Exclusive Conversation About Netflix, Domestic Terrorism, and the Brilliance of ‘Get Out’
The aftershocks of white nationalist rallies and their violence are still felt in Charlottesville, which hosted the 30th annual Virginia Film Festival this weekend. At the entrance of the fest’s marquee venue, the Paramount Theater (located on the idyllic main street that became a conflict zone August 12), the state pressured festival organizers to install metal detectors. Even as the festival decided to focus on the theme of “Race in Film,” out-of-town white supremacists started making their presence felt in Charlottesville as court appearances stemming from “A12” (the locals’ term for the horrific events this summer) began.

Against this backdrop, Spike Lee came to Charlottesville this weekend and screened his 1997 documentary “4 Little Girls,” about the 1963 murder of four young African-American girls in the bombing of the Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.

“I think terrorism is terrorism whether it’s Isis, the Klan, it’s all terrorism,” said Lee introducing the

Willard and Ben — Region B

Guest Reviewer Lee Broughton is back, with a rodent roundup of horror, or more accurately, psychological suspense interrupted by a few salacious slayings. What would Mickey say?

The brief synopses of Daniel Mann’s Willard and Phil Karlson’s Ben that appeared in the horror movie books and magazines that kids in the UK loved to pore over during the late 1970s always gave the impression that this pair of killer rat films were hardcore horror shows.

In truth, the actual horror content of both films is relatively mild and infrequent. In spite of this, Willard and Ben still tend to be discussed in terms of their relation to the often more extreme movies that appeared in the “animals attack” cycle of horror films that flourished during the 1970s.

That particular subgenre represents something of a niche interest area that is governed by a pretty tight set of boundaries. The

Why 'Reputation' Is a Make Or Break Album For Taylor Swift -- And the Age of the 2010s Pop Star

Why 'Reputation' Is a Make Or Break Album For Taylor Swift -- And the Age of the 2010s Pop Star
Let’s take a moment to recall the 2008 MTV Vma Best New Artist nominees.

That year, Tokio Hotel (what?!) upset Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Jordin Sparks for the annual honor, in a sort of curse of fate that befalls many Best New Artists, as Tokio Hotel went on to not make much of an impact stateside (they’ve fared much better in their homeland of Germany), while Sparks grabbed a couple of chart-climbing hits, and Swift, Perry and Cyrus became… well, you know… megastars.

Perry’s 2010 Teenage Dream album is matched only by Michael Jackson’s Bad in the number of No. 1 singles it produced, Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” of an album frenzy was arguably the most culturally relevant (and arguably, appropriative) phenomenon of 2013, and Swift -- a self-image virtuoso and omnipresent millennial icon -- transformed from the “Teardrops on My Guitar” country darling, to the victim of the most infamous mic-grabbing in recorded

Pink and Her Daughter, Willow, Look Like 2 Fairy-Tale Princesses at the CMAs
Pink and her 6-year-old daughter, Willow, wore whimsical fairy-tale dresses while walking the Cma Awards red carpet on Wednesday night, and they looked like two real-life princesses. The 38-year-old "What About Us" singer opted for an off-white ruffled dress, while Willow donned a studded black dress and a crown. Although she was dressed to impress, Pink jumped into mommy mode when she stopped to help Willow with her hair on the carpet. In August, Pink accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs and gave a heartwarming speech about teaching her daughter to be true to herself. Her soulful performance at the 51st annual country music event received a standing ovation, and we love that she brought her daughter along to enjoy the festivities while leaving the boys, husband Carey Hart and son Jameson, at home. A video of the segment was posted on YouTube on Wednesday. Paris first spoke to Taylor in her normal American accent, saying she was calling from Australia and that a local friend, "Rachel," really wanted to talk to him. Cue the Twlight puns and Australian stereotypes. "Rachel," who many noted sounded more British than Australian, then proceeded to tell him how she often...
