‘Wonder’ Review: Jacob Tremblay Faces Middle School In this Emotionally Generous Family Drama
Wonder” is as manipulative as movies get, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes a story needs to steer you; sometimes a story tells you what to feel, but redeems itself by virtue of the sincerity with which it shows why you should feel that way. In much the same way that fables and fairy tales exist to making a particular point, subtlety would be counterintuitive to the very nature of what this film is trying to do. And really, no one should be expecting Chekhov from an inspirational tear-jerker about a deformed little kid whose parents are played by Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson.

As generous as it is linear (and only emotionally pornographic towards the end), “Wonder” may be manipulative, but it’s also instructive. It’s a how-to guide for kindness — a good lesson for kids, and a helpful reminder for adults. It’s not

The 20 Saddest Movies of the 21st Century, From ‘Amour’ to ‘Million Dollar Baby’
As much as we all love a stunning tracking shot or an impeccably stylized thriller, even the most discerning cinephiles have to admit: Sometimes, you just want a good cry. Often it’s the most gut-wrenching movies that remain in our collective cultural memory the longest; “Sophie’s Choice,” “Terms of Endearment,” and “Schindler’s List,” to name just a few. Even in an age when auteur-driven driven sci-fi and superhero franchises reign supreme, Hollywood will always love a good old-fashioned tearjerker. Which is why we thought it necessary to single out some of the saddest movies of the century — so far.

Though it might sound trite, one doesn’t have to give up gorgeous cinematography or a tightly-wound script in order to be moved. Not only do the films on this list find beauty in the most heartbreaking of human experiences,

Will Matthew Weiner’s Sexual Harassment Allegation Sink Amazon’s ‘The Romanoffs’?

Will Matthew Weiner’s Sexual Harassment Allegation Sink Amazon’s ‘The Romanoffs’?
In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, Amazon quickly put a halt to an untitled Weinstein Co. project from David O. Russell. But another Weinstein project, “The Romanoffs,” continued without the now-embattled production company.

Now the fate of “The Romanoffs” may now be called into question as well, following new allegations against series creator Matthew Weiner. In an article for The Information, former “Mad Men” writer Kater Gordon said Weiner, who created the critically acclaimed AMC series, harassed her one night while working on a script.

A spokesperson for Weiner said, “he does not remember saying this comment nor does it reflect a comment he would say to any colleague,” while Amazon did not return a request for comment.

Nonetheless, Amazon now finds itself in a much more complicated position with “The Romanoffs” than it did with the Russell series. The Russell show, set to star Julianne Moore, Robert De Niro and Michael Shannon,

Gordon’s accusation stands alone, but in the current environment that sees new accusers daily — and the falls from grace that often follow, including that of former Amazon Studios head Roy Price,

10 Things About The Dark Knight You Never Knew

10 Things About The Dark Knight You Never Knew
The Dark Knight is one of the greatest comic book movies of all time, ranked among the popcorn cinema elite in fan polls as one of the best movies ever. The penultimate chapter of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy saw Christian Bale's Batman go up against the Joker, portrayed with haunting villainy by the late Heath Ledger, who won a posthumous Oscar for the role. Ledger's commitment to the character is the stuff of legend. But there were plenty of other cool facts behind the scenes, as well.

Katie Holmes skipped the sequel to make a terrible comedy.

Memento filmmaker Christopher Nolan rescued the World's Greatest Detective from the train wreck of glossy camp that was Joel Schumacher's Batman and Robin with 2005's Batman Begins, a serious minded reboot adored by fans and critics. Katie Holmes co-starred as Bruce Wayne love interest Rachel Dawes, but the Dawson's Creek

Gerard Butler says Angel Has Fallen is the series’ Logan

Back in October it was announced that Gerard Butler is set to return as Secret Service agent Mike Banning for Angel Has Fallen, a sequel to the hit action films Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen, and in an interview with Cinema Blend to promote his new film Geostorm, Butler has revealed that the third movie is set to deliver a more character-focussed story, similar to that of this year’s Logan.

“You know, it’s fun to watch a city falling or the White House falling, and it’s fun to watch it again, and you go ‘what?’ The joke would be, ‘What’s next? Tokyo?’ Ok. So let’s take it in another direction and go inner world, and it just feels a little more surprising. It was almost like Logan was to Wolverine, is our Angel Has Fallen was to the first two.”

Today, we're studying 10 ridiculous red carpet interviews. And none of them went as planned. These things are bad.

Film Feature: HollywoodChicago.com Tackles Pro Football Films

Chicago – It’s the opening Sunday of the NFL, and what better time to celebrate the films that celebrate the sport that celebrate the ballers. Film history has a steroid-free stack of pro football films in all categories. Patrick McDonald, Jon Lennon Espino and Spike Walters of HollywoodChicago.com take on three prime examples.

The earliest known footage of a football game was a 1903 match-up between powerhouses Princeton and Yale, filmed by Thomas Edison. The earliest narrative films dealt with the college game, from Harold Lloyd’s “The Freshman” (1925) to the Marx Brothers in “Horse Feathers” (1932). An early example of a pro football movie is “The Cowboy Quarterback” (1939), which involves a scout for the “Chicago Packers” (gee, even in olden days screenwriters were lazy as shit).
