‘American Gangster’ and the Two Sides of Ridley Scott

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.

There are at least two Ridley Scotts working in Hollywood. Ridley Scott, auteur — the man who revolutionized science fiction and horror cinema at the same time with Alien, who single-handedly resurrected the swords-and-sandals epic with Gladiator, who

American Gangster heading to the small screen courtesy of Narcos co-creator

According to Screen Daily, Narcos co-creator Chris Brancato is developing a prequel series to the Ridley Scott movie American Gangster entitled The Godfather of Harlem, which will take place five years before the film and see Forest Whitaker taking on the role of mob boss Ellsworth ‘Bumpy’ Johnson.

“It stars Forest Whitaker, he will play our lead character,” said Brancato. “It’s essentially the prequel to the movie American Gangster. It’s Harlem, the 1960s, a gangster named Bumpy Johnson was very close friends with Malcom X, so the show is about the collision of the criminal underworld and the civil rights movement. It’s an opportunity to examine some of the things that are going on racially right now, but through the prism of the past.”

Brancato, who left Narcos after its first season for the short-lived Of Kings and Prophets, went on to state that he has written the script,

American Gangster prequel series in the works starring Forest Whitaker

  • JoBlo
I doubt that many would count American Gangster as a top-tier Ridley Scott film, but it certainly isn't a bad piece of work, however, with a cast comprised of Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Josh Brolin, Cuba Gooding Jr., Ted Levine, Carla Gugino, Idris Elba, and John Hawkes, among others, it really should have been so much better. It's been ten years... Read More...

Coming to America 2 Gets Snatched Director Jonathan Levine
Paramount is moving forward with the long-gestating sequel Coming to America 2, setting a new director and writer. Jonathan Levine (Snatched) has come aboard to direct this Coming to America sequel, working from a script by Kenya Barris (Black-ish, Barbershop: The Next Cut). The project was first rumored earlier this year, but was eventually confirmed, and now it seems the studio is moving forward on this sequel.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on this sequel, which comes five months after original Coming to America writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield were brought on by Paramount to write the script. It isn't clear if Kenya Barris will be working from their draft, or if he will be doing a page-one rewrite and starting from scratch. Paramount hasn't set a release date or a production schedule yet, but with a new director and writer aboard, that may happen sooner rather than later.

Film Feature: HollywoodChicago.com Tackles Pro Football Films

Chicago – It’s the opening Sunday of the NFL, and what better time to celebrate the films that celebrate the sport that celebrate the ballers. Film history has a steroid-free stack of pro football films in all categories. Patrick McDonald, Jon Lennon Espino and Spike Walters of HollywoodChicago.com take on three prime examples.

The earliest known footage of a football game was a 1903 match-up between powerhouses Princeton and Yale, filmed by Thomas Edison. The earliest narrative films dealt with the college game, from Harold Lloyd’s “The Freshman” (1925) to the Marx Brothers in “Horse Feathers” (1932). An early example of a pro football movie is “The Cowboy Quarterback” (1939), which involves a scout for the “Chicago Packers” (gee, even in olden days screenwriters were lazy as shit).

How Emmy Rivals James Lipton and Neil deGrasse Tyson Chase — and Edit — Celebrities
You wouldn’t think that National Geographic talk show “StarTalk,” hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, would have anything in common with its Emmy rival for Outstanding Informational Series or Special, 90-year-old James Lipton’s “Inside the Actor’s Studio,” which Bravo airs to a global audience of 94 million in 125 countries. “StarTalk” started as a Syrius podcast — NatGeo cherrypicks 20 episodes for the TV show — and is up for its third Emmy, while “Studio,” with 20 nominations and one win in 2013, is the sixth most-nominated show ever.

Both men wrangle celebrities, who submit to being interviewed on camera at length, and then edit the hell out of what they get. Lipton and Tyson use this celebrity wattage to lure viewers into watching subjects near to their hearts: the art of acting and the power of science, respectively.

Over 23 years hosting “Inside The Actor’s Studio,” Lipton has interviewed many of this year’s Emmy nominees,

SAG-aftra Presidential Candidate Pete Antico Blasts Union Leaders Following ‘Deadpool 2’ Stunt Death
SAG-aftra presidential candidate and veteran stuntman Pete Antico has blasted union leadership for failure to provide protection to the stunt community.

Antico issued a blistering statement to Variety on Tuesday, a day after the death of stuntwoman Joi “Sj” Harris on the set of “Deadpool 2” and a month after John Bernecker’s death on “The Walking Dead” set. Antico said both deaths are tragic.

“The stunt coordinators on those sets have vast experience tenure and are at the top of their game,” he said. “We have not received much information regarding the details of the incidents; however, I do know that the stunt community is not protected in our collective bargaining agreement and has not been for years. There are no qualifications for a stunt coordinator in our collective bargaining agreement. There never was. That is unconscionable. A producer can hire anyone who says they are a coordinator and most of the time you get what
