Quentin Tarantino Film About Manson Family Murders Lands at Sony

Quentin Tarantino Film About Manson Family Murders Lands at Sony
Sony Pictures has emerged victorious in its quest to land worldwide rights to Quentin Tarantino’s next film. The studio was one of three finalists for distribution rights to the picture, beating out Warner Bros. and Paramount to land one of the hottest titles on the market.

Studio chief Tom Rothman pushed aggressively for the project, working with his top deputy Sanford Panitch and marketing and distribution chief Josh Greenstein to court the “Pulp Fiction” director, and selling Tarantino on the studio’s ability to market the picture and roll it out internationally.

Tarantino drove a hard bargain, however, and some studios balked at his deal terms. The picture, set in 1969, involves the Charles Manson family murders. It is rumored to have a budget of nearly $100 million and Tarantino is demanding first dollar gross, meaning he gets a taste of the studio’s pre-tax revenues. He also receives final cut. That scared

Quentin Tarantino and the Fate of ‘#9’: 6 Questions Studios Should Ask Before Signing Hollywood’s Hottest Free Agent

Quentin Tarantino and the Fate of ‘#9’: 6 Questions Studios Should Ask Before Signing Hollywood’s Hottest Free Agent
What studios are willing to bid to win the newest Tarantino movie is staggering: an upfront agreement to a $100 million production budget, first-dollar returns, and final cut. At a time when even $35 million for an original action film like “Baby Driver” is considered a gamble, this is unprecedented.

The reason is self evident: What Tarantino can do is otherwise missing from American filmmaking. He only directs his own scripts and has never made a sequel, but his films are global events. Tarantino remains one of the only directors whose original films can rake in two-to-one foreign-to-domestic box office returns.

Still, the studios’ dog-and-pony shows are odd. So many people associated with Harvey Weinstein were victims of his abuse, tainted by their association with the apparent serial rapist, or left in the wreckage at 99 Hudson Street.

‘Lady Dynamite’ Season 2 Review: The Perfect Antidote for This Woman-Hating Garbage World

‘Lady Dynamite’ Season 2 Review: The Perfect Antidote for This Woman-Hating Garbage World
Every day, it seems, we’re confronted by reminder after reminder that the world is a dumpster fire, so it’s a genuine relief to have a new season of “Lady Dynamite” premiere this weekend. Reality is dumb, but life inside Maria Bamford’s brain is a blessing.

The series, created by Mitch Hurwitz and Pam Brady, is based on Bamford’s life to a deeply felt degree, celebrating her quirks as it chronicles her misadventures as an actor and comedian with plenty of meta touches and occasional dashes of the profane. Inside Maria’s brain, the rules of time and space are constantly in flux, pugs can talk, and even the darkest truths feel bearable, especially when her issues with manic depression and bipolar disorder flare up. At times, “Lady Dynamite” goes down some dark paths. But because the show is so throughly grounded in Bamford’s innate goodness,

Weinstein Co. Debt Tops $500 Million (Exclusive)

Weinstein Co. Debt Tops $500 Million (Exclusive)
The Weinstein Co. is trying to secure a financial lifeline that will allow the indie film and television studio to avert bankruptcy. The company still believes that it can find a buyer for its library of award-winning movies and programming without having to file for Chapter 11, but even with a cash infusion, its financial picture is bleak.

A series of sexual harassment and assault allegations involving co-founder Harvey Weinstein have triggered the studio’s current crisis, but knowledgeable insiders say that the company faces staggering debt levels that could complicate a sale. They estimate that the Weinstein Co. has a debt load of roughly $520 million. The breakdown of financial obligations demonstrates that the company is heavily leveraged and has extensively used its film library as collateral to secure loans that have allowed it to operate.

In terms of a breakdown, the Weinstein Co. maintains two credit facilities, one for $200 million that’s secured by a library of films

Harvey Weinstein Rep Says Indictment Not ‘Imminent’

Police have been investigating Weinstein in conjunction with allegations that he raped “Boardwalk Empire” actress Paz de la Huerta on two separate instances in 2010. The New York Post reports that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance’s office is prepared to present evidence to a grand jury and

While Quentin Tarantino got some mild nods of approval for his full disclosure interview with the New York Times about Harvey Weinstein — in which he admitted knowing his longtime distributor, financier, and friend had sexually harassed women, and regretted not doing more to stop him — Anthony Bourdain was apparently not one of those applauding the “Pulp Fiction” director’s honesty.

Robert Rodriguez Says Casting Rose McGowan in ‘Grindhouse’ Was an F-U to Harvey Weinstein (Exclusive)
Robert Rodriguez says he knew about Harvey Weinstein’s alleged sexual assault of Rose McGowan and accuses the mogul of burying the release of “Grindhouse” out of spite. Rodriguez and McGowan were in a relationship from 2006 to 2009, and the director tells Variety in a statement that he was inspired to cast McGowan as a “bad ass” character in the film as a way of getting back at her alleged assailant.

McGowan has accused Weinstein of raping her in 1997 while she was appearing in “Scream,” a horror hit that was released by Miramax, his former company. Dozens of women have accused Weinstein of assault and harassment. His accusers include Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Mira Sorvino, and Cara Delevingne.

Rodriguez worked with Miramax, and later the Weinstein Co. for years, primarily releasing films through Dimension, a genre label run by Harvey’s brother Bob. Films he made for the companies include “From Dusk Til Dawn,” “Spy Kids,” and “The Faculty
