China Opportunities for Hollywood Still Big, Says EastWest Bank’s Dominic Ng (Exclusive)
Collapsed acquisitions and halted payments have gripped the imagination in Hollywood, just as the U.S. film industry had come to regard China as its biggest source of external capital. But if the deal talk has been scaled back, there are still numerous reasons why Hollywood and the Chinese film industry are going to be working ever closer.

That is the view of Dominic Ng, chairman of EastWest Bank, the company which has been involved in most of the major China-Hollywood transactions of the past five years. Writing in the bank’s Reach Further in-house magazine, Ng explains “How Hollywood Can Still Capitalize on the Chinese Market.”

Deal flow has fallen from some $5 billion in 2016, to less than $500 million in 2017. And there have been no major acquisitions since February.

However, he argues that “the fundamentals continue to support greater cooperation between Chinese and U.S. entertainment companies.” PwC projects that China’s Entertainment and Media sector will grow

Jackie Chan karate kicks his way back on the big screen in The Foreigner!

The action movie has Chan playing a humble businessman with a buried past who seeks justice when his daughter is killed in an act of terrorism. Pierce Brosnan also stars, teaming up again with GoldenEye director Martin Campbell.

Here are 5 reasons why you need to check this movie out:

1. The Stunts

Jackie Chan has endured many years of long, hard work and a ton of injuries to establish international success via his early beginnings in Hong Kong's martial arts movie industry. Making his way to North American audiences in 1995 with Rumble in the Bronx, this was the first time we saw an action star do his own stunts as he ran up walls and bounced off cars. Our Favorite Faces Of Jackie Chan

This week saw the North American wide release of Martin Campbell's thriller The Foreigner, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan. For Jackie, it's actually his second film in the current box office top-10, as he also voices one of the characters in The Lego Ninjago Movie. At 63 years of age, Jackie Chan can of course no longer be expected to show his legendary acrobatic martial arts prowess of thirty (or more than forty) years ago, so to see him diversify towards animated films and serious thrillers makes sense. But legendary he rightfully is, as amazing he was. He has performed in more than 130 films, using a large variety of names and spellings (IMDb lists Jacky Chan, Yuan Lung Chan, Yuen-Lung Chan, Jakkî Chen,...

Blumhouse's 'Happy Death Day' Debuts with Excellent $26.5 Million

Blumhouse's 'Happy Death Day' Debuts with Excellent $26.5 Million
Universal and Blumhouse score yet again, this time with Happy Death Day. The horror film easily topped the weekend box office, adding to the production house's impressive stable of original horror films including the likes of The Visit, Split and Get Out. At the same time, Blade Runner 2049 dropped over 50% in its second weekend, Stx's The Foreigner topped Mojo's weekend forecast, Open Road's Marshall delivered on expectations and Annapurna's Professor Marston and the Wonder Women crashed and burned. With an estimated $26.5 million, Happy Death Day topped the weekend box office, outperforming the opening weekend for The Visit, which went on to gross $65.2 million in 2015. Based on averages for Blumhouse titles debuting over $20 million, it seems reasonable to expect Happy Death Day to also push toward a $60 million run domestically, especially with Halloween still around the corner. The film scored a "B" CinemaScore from opening day audiences which broke down 54% female vs.

Happy Death Day” has cause for celebration.

The latest from Blumhouse and Universal is leading the box office this weekend with $26.5 million from 3,149 locations. That puts it far ahead of “Blade Runner 2049,” which is skidding to $15.1 million during its second weekend at 4,058 locations, down 54% from its disappointing opening weekend.

A horror spin on “Groundhog Day,” “Happy Death Day” centers on Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) as a woman who wakes up to the same day — her birthday — every day, and is murdered every time. Christopher B. Landon directed the film based on a script by Scott Lobdell. The film, which earned a B CinemaScore (good for a horror flick), particularly appealed to female and younger moviegoers — the audience was split 54% female, as opposed to 46% male, and 63% was under age 25. The release date was pegged to Friday the 13th and the weeks leading up to Halloween.

“We’re obviously thrilled with the release,” said Universal
