10 movies that felt great upto a point

...but then something happens to the originality/acting/plot and it leaves you with a bad taste in the mouth. Really sad when a movie has such potential but bad writing and/or acting ruin a portion of the film. I wont give any spoilers.

Director: Danny Boyle | Stars: Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne, Chris Evans, Cliff Curtis

Stunning visuals, great atmosphere and the actors are doing a great job. The story about the 'bad guy' so to speak looked good in theory but the execution was dreadful to me. It wasn't just unbelievable but ugly looking when compared to the rest of the movie and that really ruined it for me.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt

Votes: 221,518 | Gross: $100.92M

Problems I had with this one were very few, mainly things in the execution that kept me from immersing myself in the movie. And there were some melodramatic speaches from Foster toward the end. And the meeting with the alien was so damn short and unsatisfying. The whole movie is a foreplay to it, did the writers(and its a Sagan novel, too) have so few ideas about it that they made it that short? It disappointed me.

Director: Joss Whedon | Stars: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alan Tudyk

Im a fan of Firefly like everyone else but for all the greatness and Nathat Fillion in it it still has its couple flaws - how can reavers be so aggressive and mad and fly spaceships at the same time, and the irritating River Tam.

4. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

A lawyer takes on a negligent homicide case involving a priest who performed an exorcism on a young girl.

Director: Scott Derrickson | Stars: Laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Campbell Scott

Votes: 104,955 | Gross: $75.07M

Scariest movie about demonic possession I've seen, not as grotesque as The Exorcist. If you watch it late at night you wont be able to sleep. Or maye you will when the "god" part is reached really late into the movie and gives you a genuine chuckle.

5. The Village (2004)

A series of events tests the beliefs of a small isolated countryside village.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Joaquin Phoenix, Bryce Dallas Howard

Votes: 212,261 | Gross: $114.20M

Dont you get it yet, Village haters - its not a horror movie. And it would've been perfect if it wasnt for silver-spoon-in-her-mouth Bryce Howard and her sugary depiction of being in love with Joaquin's character. Good thing his and Adrien Brody's talent make up for her end.

6. Donnie Darko (2001)

A troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes, after he narrowly escapes a bizarre accident.

Director: Richard Kelly | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne

Votes: 648,221 | Gross: $0.19M

Bizzare but ultimately interesting for the most part story. Its hard for me to watch kids or teenagers play serious roles but this wasnt at all that bad. I guess what didnt click for me was, given the many characters and story lines, that time travel wasnt simply a tool for the plot like it usually is but more like the main goal - explaining what it is. Like O'Riley would say "You cant explain that!" and it really wasnt - a bigger mess was made.

7. Silent Hill (2006)

A woman, Rose, goes in search for her adopted daughter within the confines of a strange, desolate town called Silent Hill.

Director: Christophe Gans | Stars: Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden, Sean Bean, Deborah Kara Unger

Votes: 192,020 | Gross: $46.98M

If you havent played the game and expirienced it's horrific atmosphere you probably wont appreciate this movie as much. I dont really have the right to put it in this list for that reason and every morning I delete it and every evening when its dark and I remember the game again I put it back up on the list. Maybe the acting isnt as troubling but in the second half - when the settings kinda change - the film starts going downhill.

8. The Skeptic (2009)

A lawyer who doesn't believe in ghosts is haunted after moving into a family mansion.

Director: Tennyson Bardwell | Stars: Tim Daly, Tom Arnold, Zoe Saldana, Edward Herrmann

Votes: 3,668 | Gross: $0.01M

I enjoyed the way paranormal events are expirienced and interpreted by a non-believer and how that evolves throughout the movie. That basically summarizes the good sides of the movie, there's nothing extraordinary about the acting or plot or cinematography and the end isnt fully thought out, still there are some quality chills from the horror side of the film.

9. Pandorum (2009)

A pair of crew members aboard a spaceship wake up with no knowledge of their mission or their identities.

Director: Christian Alvart | Stars: Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Cam Gigandet, Antje Traue

Votes: 130,593 | Gross: $10.33M

The first 15 or so minutes grabbed my attention very tightly. But although the visuals, sound and feeling of fear are great the story is not well thought out past those first minutes. You can watch it just fine as a horror movie just dont expect original plot.

10. Event Horizon (1997)

Director: Paul W.S. Anderson | Stars: Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, Joely Richardson

Its a horror movie with interesting plot and twists and very scary atmosphere. But I put it at the last spot because it so very gory and uses cheap scares like sudden shocking images.
