1. It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010)
PG-13 | 101 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
A clinically depressed teenager gets a new start after he checks himself into an adult psychiatric ward.
Votes: 117,482 | Gross: $6.35M
Sort of a modern day Cuckoo's Nest, with a little Zack humor thrown in. Liked the theme music that was also heard at the end of fight club.
2. The Woman in Black (2012)
PG-13 | 95 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror
A young solicitor travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals.
Votes: 156,314 | Gross: $54.33M
Movie relied WAy TOO MUCH on cheap scare thrills such as ominous music, and people, animals, and birds coming out of nowhere. Daniel Radcliffe proved to be a convincing actor outside of the Potter realm.
3. The Thin Man (1934)
Not Rated | 91 min | Comedy, Crime, Mystery
Former detective Nick Charles and his wealthy wife Nora investigate a murder case, mostly for the fun of it.
I like the coolness of the male character, how he drinks to excess and never gets rattled.
4. He's Just Not That Into You (2009)
PG-13 | 129 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
This Baltimore-set movie of interconnecting story arcs deals with the challenges of reading or misreading human behavior.
Votes: 141,901 | Gross: $93.95M
"This *beep* is black",,,a random line from a bartender that I found so humorous. The honest guy, who told lies about smoking, came up the ultimate loser in this flick.
5. Original Sin (2001)
R | 116 min | Drama, Mystery, Romance
A woman along with her lover, plan to con a rich man by marrying him and on earning his trust running away with all his money. Everything goes as planned until she actually begins to fall in love with him.
Votes: 48,032 | Gross: $16.25M
I felt a little too much empathy with this film, as it clearly shows how stupid men can be pursuing a woman obviously beautiful, yet flawed.
6. 50 First Dates (2004)
PG-13 | 99 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
Henry Roth is a man afraid of commitment up until he meets the beautiful Lucy. They hit it off and Henry think he's finally found the girl of his dreams, until he discovers she has short-term memory loss and forgets him the very next day.
Votes: 287,654 | Gross: $120.91M
Adam Sandler has that rare way of keeping his content fairly clean, and can pull of the "funny sentimental." The penguin, the walrus, and certainly the little kids of Ula would have been miserably sappy in other hands.
7. The Conspirator (2010)
PG-13 | 122 min | Crime, Drama, History
Mary Surratt is the lone female charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination trial of Abraham Lincoln. As the whole nation turns against her, she is forced to rely on her reluctant lawyer to uncover the truth and save her life.
Votes: 25,289 | Gross: $11.54M
They made Stanton out to be quite the villian in both his rather Alexander Haig'esque rise to power after the assassination; and the way he insisted on revengeful guilt for Mary Serrat.
8. Zeitgeist (2007 Video)
Not Rated | 118 min | Documentary, History
Mythology and belief in society today, presenting uncommon perspectives of common cultural issues.
Most definitely one of the most eye-opening movies put together on film. The eyes even open at the end! Love over fear....
9. Straw Dogs (2011)
R | 110 min | Action, Drama, Thriller
L.A. screenwriter David Sumner relocates with his wife to her hometown in the deep South. There, while tensions build between them, a brewing conflict with locals becomes a threat to them both.
Votes: 29,053 | Gross: $10.32M
If a movie has the effect of changing your personal life in so many ways; and allows you to discover things you suspected but never verified--then this movie DEFINITELY had an impact. 10/10
10. House of Wax (2005)
R | 108 min | Horror
A group of unwitting teens are stranded near a strange wax museum and soon must fight to survive and keep from becoming the next exhibit.
Votes: 101,872 | Gross: $32.06M
I must be one of the few, but in addition to finding Paris Hilton incredibly attractive for a blonde....I actually think she has some acting ability. Too bad she wasn't the girl that lasted till the end.
11. My Week with Marilyn (2011)
R | 99 min | Biography, Drama
Votes: 76,285 | Gross: $14.60M
Things I learned from watching Marilyn: She had a mother who was committed to an insane asylum. Her father was unknown. Her insecurities came largely from a fear of abandonment. She had a personal "yes woman" director that nobody really cared for.
12. The Hunting Party (2007)
R | 101 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama
A young journalist, a seasoned cameraman and a discredited war correspondent embark on an unauthorized mission to find the No.1 war criminal in Bosnia. However, their extremely dangerous target decides to come after them.
Votes: 23,053 | Gross: $0.97M
Things I learned from watching The Hunting Party: The whole war in Bosnia started over a MUSLIM ethnic cleansing. Sarejevo was the site of the 1984 Winter Olympics.
14. Dirty Pretty Things (2002)
R | 97 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
An illegal Nigerian immigrant discovers the unpalatable side of London life.
Votes: 36,969 | Gross: $8.11M
I remembered the fact that Lagos is the capital of Nigeria. INS agents are quite a bit more serious in London. There is nothing more dangerous than a virtuous man who refuses to sleep.
15. Cloud Atlas (2012)
R | 172 min | Action, Drama, Mystery
An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.
Votes: 309,476 | Gross: $27.11M
Halle Berry looks best in 2012 getup. Just the fact that somebody mentioned a lot of latex in one of the reviews had me seeing latex everywhere. Shasha pointed out that it was "New Seoul" because Americans are much too afraid of the Chinese to portray anything like "New Beijing".
16. Charley Varrick (1973)
PG | 111 min | Action, Crime, Drama
A man, his wife, and their friend, stage a bloody bank robbery, unaware they are stealing money from the Mob.
Getting more from a bank heist can be a bad thing if the mob had put "cleaned money" there first. It was funny to watch folks talk about altering passports and the like; seems a near impossibility in this post 9-11 world. Walter Matthau was quite the dashing figure back in the day.
17. Secretary (2002)
R | 107 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
A young woman, recently released from a mental hospital, gets a job as a secretary to a demanding lawyer, where their employer-employee relationship turns into a sexual, sadomasochistic one.
Votes: 73,080 | Gross: $4.06M
Could anybody else besides James Spader played this role?
18. Calendar Girls (2003)
PG-13 | 108 min | Comedy, Drama
A Women's Institute chapter's fundraising effort for a local hospital by posing nude for a calendar becomes a media sensation.
Votes: 20,759 | Gross: $31.04M
There is something about taking pictures of naked, old women that surely must have inspired a Hallmark card here or there.
19. Mambo Italiano (2003)
R | 99 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
The son of Italian immigrants to Canada struggles to find the best way to reveal to his parents that he's gay.
Votes: 5,853 | Gross: $6.24M
I got more of an appreciation why Paul seems to abhor gays so much after watching this film. I don't necessarily believe it's all homophobia. I do believe he would get a chuckle from watching this, however.
20. Jesus' Son (1999)
R | 107 min | Drama
A young man turns from drug addiction and petty crime to a life redeemed by a discovery of compassion.
Votes: 6,471 | Gross: $1.28M
Jack Black was a nice addition, and the film went downhill with his absence from the screen. It was an interesting scene when the two drugged out pals went to a "cemetery" only to find out that it was an abandoned drive in movie theatre. Interestingly, the drive in was still projecting a film. Does this really happen?
21. The Company (2003)
PG-13 | 112 min | Drama, Music, Romance
Ensemble drama centered around a group of ballet dancers, with a focus on one young dancer (Campbell) who's poised to become a principal performer.
Votes: 5,811 | Gross: $2.28M
This movie seemed like nothing more than an excuse to foist ballet onto the unsuspecting public. It is interesting how an actor (Malcolm McDowell) can get typecast. He played the exact same role in a Monk episode.
22. Safar e Ghandehar (2001)
Not Rated | 81 min | Biography, Drama, War
After an Afghanistan-born woman who lives in Canada receives a letter from her suicidal sister, she takes a perilous journey through Afghanistan to try to find her.
Votes: 5,975 | Gross: $0.02M
I kept waiting for a scene of a mine exploding, since much was made during the film about how there were literally thousands of mines in the Afghani desert. If there were ever a case to be made about how religion is simply a means of gaining control of a people....this movie and the Taliban version of Islam is certainly the poster child.
23. Lincoln (2012)
PG-13 | 150 min | Biography, Drama, History
As the War continues to rage, America's president struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on the decision to emancipate the slaves.
Votes: 214,714 | Gross: $182.21M
So good, that I saw it twice. Once, with Stephanie on Thanksgiving Day Eve, and once with Shasha about one week earlier. Interesting in that Andrew Johnson never appears, or never gets mentioned. Schuyler Colfax ---> Speaker of the House Alexander Stephens ---> Vice President of the Confederacy
24. Lisbon Story (1994)
PG | 100 min | Drama, Music
The director Friedrich Monroe has trouble with finishing a silent b&w movie about Lisbon. He calls his friend, the sound engineer Phillip Winter, for help. As Winter arrives Lisbon weeks ... See full summary »
Lisbon looks a lot like San Francisco. Right down to what looked like the Golden Gate bridge to me.
25. Snow Falling on Cedars (1999)
PG-13 | 127 min | Drama, Mystery, Romance
A Japanese-American fisherman is accused of killing his neighbor at sea. In the 1950s, race figures into the trial. So does reporter Ishmael.
Votes: 12,800 | Gross: $14.38M
I felt really badly for the main character, but loved his show of honor by coming forward and managing to take the Japanese dude off from what could very well have led to his death. American guy loses Asian girl....hmm, not emotional at all.
Screen Two (1985–2002)
R | 91 min | Drama
Set in Ireland, Sharon Curley is a 20 year old living with her parents and many brothers and sisters. When she gets herself pregnant and refuses to name the father, she becomes the talk of ... See full summary »
Votes: 5,165 | Gross: $3.32M
Didn't they know then that alcohol is damaging to a fetus? And are all Irish girls that homely? "Up a pole" seems to be Irish slang for pregnant, and a frequent curse word is *beep*
27. Love and Pain and the Whole Damn Thing (1973)
PG | 110 min | Comedy, Drama
American Walter Elbertson, in his late teens, is feeling lost within his family of overachievers. Thirty-something Englishwoman Lila Fisher is emotionally repressed. The two meet on their ... See full summary »
The Timothy Bottoms character was extremely annoying. He was too overly sentimental and sensitive. His eager awkwardness around women reminded me of myself when I was that age.
28. Contraband (2012)
R | 109 min | Action, Crime, Drama
To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.
Votes: 107,133 | Gross: $66.53M
I enjoy Marky Mark action films. I admired his courage, and willingness to live in the moment, solving one crisis to the next in this flick.
29. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974)
R | 104 min | Action, Crime, Thriller
In New York, armed men hijack a subway car and demand a ransom for the passengers. Even if it's paid, how could they get away?
Walter Matthau continues to show me that "The Odd Couple" was not his crowning and only achievement. He can definitely play the hard boiled cop role. And the early part with the way he brushed off the Japanese businessmen was pretty hilarious.
30. Les Misérables (2012)
PG-13 | 158 min | Drama, History, Musical
In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking parole, agrees to care for a factory worker's daughter. The decision changes their lives forever.
Votes: 266,981 | Gross: $148.81M
An absolute train wreck of a movie. Couldn't stand to see the ending, even though it only ended up being 5 minutes away. Was too afraid one of the characters was going to burst out in "song" again. 1/10
31. The Life of David Gale (2003)
R | 130 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
A man against capital punishment is accused of murdering a fellow activist and is sent to death row.
Votes: 96,262 | Gross: $19.59M
Anything with Kevin Spacey is worth seeing. 8/10
32. Nim's Island (2008)
PG | 96 min | Adventure, Comedy, Family
A young girl inhabits an isolated island with her scientist father and communicates with a reclusive author of the novel she's reading.
Votes: 29,953 | Gross: $48.01M
Surprisingly good, and I thoroughly enjoyed U2's "Beautiful Day" during the closing credits. 8/10
33. The Adjustment Bureau (2011)
PG-13 | 106 min | Romance, Sci-Fi, Thriller
The affair between a politician and a contemporary dancer is affected by mysterious forces keeping the lovers apart.
Votes: 215,342 | Gross: $62.50M
I just remembered that Sally A referred me to this movie, and that it was a much better recommendation than Les Miserables was.
34. Claire's Knee (1970)
GP | 105 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance
On holiday, a conflicted man lusts after beautiful stepsisters despite his betrothal to a diplomat's daughter.
I remember thinking that the main character made most of his advancing age. He was just darn smooth with women.
35. The Tree of Life (2011)
PG-13 | 139 min | Drama, Fantasy
The story of a family in Waco, Texas in 1956. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence and struggles with his parents' conflicting teachings.
Votes: 148,416 | Gross: $13.30M
Even though this movie centered around a boy with leaves growing on his ankles, Shasha and I were entertained by this movie. 7/10
