HORROR MOVIE NIGHT- The hoax collection

by Gonzothefacey | created - 30 Apr 2011 | updated - 13 Oct 2012 | Public

These horror films were in some way a hoax. Whether it was marketed to be real footage, said to be based on a true story or just plain taken the wrong way, these films tricked some viewers into believing false truths. Good or bad, the concept is interesting.

Three film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.

Directors: Daniel Myrick, Eduardo Sánchez | Stars: Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, Joshua Leonard, Bob Griffin

Votes: 205,282 | Gross: $140.54M

This may be the most recognized movie hoax of our time. Said to be recovered tapes of real people on a wilderness trip to find the Blair Witch. Once the movie was discovered to be a hoax the public found out that the actors were to 'keep a low profile and remain unseen' for a period of time after the film was released. The movie did not live up to all the hype- but it sure did do well in the box office because of it.

A group of people with psychic powers are invited to spend the night in a haunted house.

Stars: Nancy Travis, Matt Keeslar, Kimberly J. Brown, David Dukes

Based on a Stephen King mini-series special, the house was alleged to exist. The special told the story of the family that built the house and the history of the land. Multiple websites were created to give this hoax some backbone, including a fake Beaumont University website that the fake Joyce Rearden was supposedly teaching.

The wife of an oil tycoon becomes engrossed in the sinister evil residing within her Seattle mansion home.

Director: Craig R. Baxley | Stars: Lisa Brenner, Steven Brand, Kate Burton, Tsidii Leloka

Votes: 3,099

The story of Ellen Rimbauer is the back story of the Rose Red manor. They are the family said to have lived there and the diary was published to be true and said to have been found by Rearden. Its a great book until you find out its untrue. Not sure why King decided to do this- I was disapointed to find out that the house didnt exist. The house itself was inspired by the Whinchester Mystery House, as was Ellen Rimbauer inspired by Sarah Whinchester.

Director: Olatunde Osunsanmi | Stars: Milla Jovovich, Elias Koteas, Will Patton, Hakeem Kae-Kazim

Votes: 66,964 | Gross: $25.46M

This movie boasted real audio and video recordings of actual alien abduction, but was found out to be false. Although many people do disapear in that area it is far more likely due to the rough terrain and isolation than to aliens or owls.

The movie boasts footage of a paranormal investigation team researching John Wayne Gacy's allegedly haunted house. Although the serial killer back story is true, the movie is not.

Director: Jude Gerard Prest | Stars: Yaz Canli, Kai Cofer, Christopher Karl Johnson, Nikki Muller

This movie claims to be real footage of the exorcism of Anneliese Michel- the girl who inspired 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose.' Although the audio footage sounds authentic they use the same short clip over and over. Also the audio isn't translated so it really misses the mark with the viewer. The video however is fake and it ends up being a cheap attempt to exploit the Michel family's story.

Two teenage girls encounter an Internet child predator.

Director: Michael Goi | Stars: Amber Perkins, Rachel Quinn, Dean Waite, Jael Elizabeth Steinmeyer

Votes: 7,071

Promoted to be 'based on a true story' the movie is more like a mixture of different stories about online predators that could be somewhat true and peoples worst fears about teens chatting to strangers online. Boasting found footage was a way to market this 'true story' but the characters are again too over the top in portraying the "worst case scenario."
