Women in prison film (or WiP) is a subgenre of exploitation film that began in the late 1930s and continues to the present day. Their stories feature imprisoned women who are subjected to sexual and physical abuse, typically by sadistic male or female prison wardens and guards. The genre also features many films in which imprisoned women engage in lesbian sex.

The Big Doll House is a 1971 women in prison film starring Pam Grier, Judy Brown, Roberta Collins, Brooke Mills, and Pat Woodell. The film follows six female inmates throughout daily life in a gritty, unidentified supra-tropical prison. Later the same year the film Women in Cages featured a similar story and setting, much the same cast, and was shot in the same abandoned prison buildings. A non-sequel follow-up, titled The Big Bird Cage, was released in 1972.

A newlywed couple in love finds a seemingly desolate place to park the car and make love. Soon, they will face prison's cruel reality.
A couple of newlyweds, Olga and Michael, are traveling along the desert and accidentally trespass on the property of Magda Urtado (Ajita Wilson), who is the director of a boot camp of sorts, where the women are treated as slaves and are half naked at all times. Magda keeps Olga in captivity while Michael is free to go, but later on in the film he plans an escape for Olga. She goes to work with the other girls out in the hot desert, and from there the plot just goes out in all different directions. There are a couple subplots in which a few of the workers are sent out to be hookers, one where a worker participates in a deadly game of cat and mouse, and one where the Governor (Antonio Mayans, billed as Robert Foster) is having trouble getting it on with his wife so he buys a couple of the workers to help him perform. There is also a scene where the Governor is finally able to have sex with his wife, but only while watching one of the females be raped by a dog. Director Jess Franco also stars in the movie as an obviously gay man.

Here, Emanuelle is a reporter going undercover at a prison notorious for its brutal treatment of prisoners to expose its human rights violations for Amnesty International. Swamp Women (1955) was one of the first films directed by Roger Corman. This adventure/crime/horror film follows undercover police officer Lee Hampton who joins three female convicts and escapes from prison. The escape is part of a larger plot to uncover a cache of diamonds hidden deep within the swamps of Louisiana. This film is sometimes also known as Cruel Swamp or Swamp Diamonds. The film is now in the public domain. In July 1993 the film was featured in the movie-mocking television show Mystery Science Theater 3000 under the title Swamp Diamonds.
