Women in prison film (or WiP) is a subgenre of exploitation film that began in the late 1930s and continues to the present day.
Their stories feature imprisoned women who are subjected to sexual and physical abuse, typically by sadistic male or female prison wardens and guards. The genre also features many films in which imprisoned women engage in lesbian sex.

A couple of newlyweds, Olga and Michael, are traveling along the desert and accidentally trespass on the property of Magda Urtado (Ajita Wilson), who is the director of a boot camp of sorts, where the women are treated as slaves and are half naked at all times. Magda keeps Olga in captivity while Michael is free to go, but later on in the film he plans an escape for Olga. She goes to work with the other girls out in the hot desert, and from there the plot just goes out in all different directions. There are a couple subplots in which a few of the workers are sent out to be hookers, one where a worker participates in a deadly game of cat and mouse, and one where the Governor (Antonio Mayans, billed as Robert Foster) is having trouble getting it on with his wife so he buys a couple of the workers to help him perform. There is also a scene where the Governor is finally able to have sex with his wife, but only while watching one of the females be raped by a dog. Director Jess Franco also stars in the movie as an obviously gay man.

Brokedown Palace (1999) is an American film directed by Jonathan Kaplan, and starring Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale. It deals with two American friends imprisoned in Thailand for drug smuggling. Because it presents a critical view of the Thai legal system, most scenes were filmed in the Philippines; however, some panoramas and views were filmed in Bangkok. Its title is taken from a Grateful Dead song written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter from their 1970 album American Beauty.

Here, Emanuelle is a reporter going undercover at a prison notorious for its brutal treatment of prisoners to expose its human rights violations for Amnesty International. Posing as Laura Candel, a prostitute, Emanuelle is incarcerated and is immediately shocked at not only the treatment of the prisoners, but also the borderline psychotic behavior of her inmates. Unfortunately, things get worse when Emanuelle's true identity is discovered by the prison warden, who subjects Emanuelle to the torture that she had come to discover.

The prison's female prisoners are the object of his twisted desires, but the tables turn when they hatch a bloody plan for escape. Explicit violence, plentiful nudity, and Third Reich imagery combine to make a film just as shocking as its forebears.

Taking place during the latter half of World War II, just as the Third Reich is beginning to crumble, ELSA FRAULEIN SS is a somewhat perverse exploitation/thriller about an SS sanctioned madam, the titular Elsa. Presiding over a brothel situated on a train that travels around the Fatherland, Elsa and her girls use sex to ferret out traitors to the Reich. However, though Elsa has been given the rank of Colonel and was appointed by Hitler himself, she finds that her rule is crumbling as fast as the Reich itself. Enmeshed in a kinky relationship with a disgruntled SS Major, Elsa suspects that one of her girls is actually a French Resistance spy and that her lover may be helping her.
