X-Men: The Fox/Marvel Universe

After the success of Marvel Studios' "Marvel Cinematic Universe" and the expected "DC Cinematic Universe", Twentieth Century Fox has announced that British comicbook writer Mark Millar has signed on to serve as creative consultant on Fox's own batch of upcoming Marvel movie adaptations; "Miller will work with Fox on developing new avenues for its X-Men and Fantastic Four tentpoles".

These include the 1960's set 'X-Men: First Class', it's sequel, the upcoming 'The Wolverine' and a Fantastic Four reboot.

As 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' includes time travel and/or alternative timelines the pre-existing X-Men films will be worked into this continuity, creating the below Universe....

This list shows how the individual movies reference each other and establish a shared universe... (There are therefore potential SPOILERS!)

In 1962, we see the formative years of Erik Lensherr and Charles Xavier leading to Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

Regarding continuity, the intention was "to make as good a film that could stand on its own two feet regardless of all the other films" and also that could "reboot and start a whole new X-Men franchise". It was also said the film was kind of an "alternate history" for the X-Men, saying that while rebooting, the writers did not want to go fully "against the canon of the X-Men trilogy".

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

Days of Future Past is a direct sequel to First Class and a spin-off pre/sequel to the original trilogy(!). Director Bryan Singer has said "it's not a sequel, it's not a prequel, it's a 'inbetwequel'."

It is set around a decade after First Class as "most of the film takes place in 1973". However Singer continues, "The movie takes place at different times. It deals with, I don't want to say time travel, but time displacement. A form of time travel which is steeped more in the X-Men [mythos]".

It will be based on the comic-books’ pioneering Days Of Future Past storyline in which Kitty Pryde from the future attempts to prevent an assassination in the present that will lead to a dystopian world where mutant-hunting Sentinels police the population, and the X-Men are either dead, in camps or leading the underground resistance.

Several actors will be reprising their roles from the X-Men Trilogy including Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Anna Paquin (Rogue), Ellen Page (Kitty Pryde), Shawn Ashmore (Bobby Drake/Iceman), Halle Berry (Storm) and Daniel Cudmore (Colossus).
This can allow the pre-existing X-Men films to be worked into this continuity, most likely as an alternative or parallel timeline; "they will appear mostly in scenes depicting an alternate dystopic future". This allows all the existing films to co-exist dispite various continuity issues...

Singer explains; "We've cracked it in a way that it makes sense. I had a two-hour conversation with James Cameron about time travel, string theory, multiverses and all that. You have to create your rules and stick wtih them. That's why Terminator and Back To The Future work so well. And there are certain mechanisms in X-Men, certain powers, perceptions and characters, that make this possible."

Singer continues; "I'm taking into account every movie. I'm not just grabbing my first two movies and First Class and smashing them together. I'm taking into account the entire universe as it’s been laid out so far on the screen, and really respecting it and trying to work with that. People took things in various directions, so there’s some clean-up, but ultimately I’m not just ignoring them either."

Regarding how the new and old characters will work together Singer said; "I don't want to say [who the protagonists are] yet, but I will say that every character has a very important function in the story. The story is designed and catered to the combined cast. It's not just throwing in people to occupy the screen, occupy the billboards. The story Days of Future Past, and our version of Days of Future Past is geared very much toward the mass cast and all their relationships and all their foibles and their achievements."

Singer has also hinted that Scott Summers/Cyclops and Jean Grey could feature even though they died in 'X-Men: The Last Stand', further suggesting that alternative timeline(s) will be invloved.

Wolverine is set to feature. The character’s slow aging process would in fact make it possible for the young and old Wolverine to both be played by Hugh Jackman.

*****************

It is not yet known how this will link the whole franchise together but my thoughts/hopes are that at the end of Days Of Future Past we could have a kind of ultimate collection of X-Men; some from the ‘First Class Universe’ and some from the ‘Original Trilogy Universe’, all going forward together in a 'New Universe', into the third film without having to worry about what has happened in the already released films…

It would make sense to set this thrid film in the 1980's but if Fox plan to have the 'Fantastic Four' reboot share this universe they may instead opt for a modern day setting...

Although there may be scenes set in the past, the majority of this film takes place after 'X-Men: The Last Stand'. However, it will basically be a stand-alone film;

Director James Mangold says; "Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all. Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there's a tremendous sense of isolation for him. That's something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline. I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it. The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that's such an interesting part of Logan's character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie. There was a sense if I’m locating this film not five minutes after the other movie, but a period of time after that last X-Men movie, I can find a Logan who is living separate from the world. He is no longer a member of some superhero team."

While most X-Men films have been categorized as "comic book action adventure," Mangold said this latest entry is more of a "Japanese noir picture with tentpole action in it."

Famke Janssen (Wolverine's long-standing love interest, 'Jean Grey') will feature. Based on the setting this will presumably be in a flashback.

Professor X may have a cameo in this film, thus helping to set up 'Days of Future Past'.

This reboot will share a universe with the new X-men films.

I had thought it could perhaps be set in the 1960's/70's to tie in to the established events of 'First Class' but Mark Millar tweeted me to confirm it will have a contemporary setting - so I assume it will be set after 'X-Men: The Last Stand', perhaps around the same time as 'The Wolverine'?
