My Favorite Movies Of All Time

Since I just made a list covering my all time favorite TV shows, I figured I might as well make one for movies as well. This includes every and any genre from horror to 'dramedy'.....

The Breakfast Club (1985)

If you have ever tried to actually name your very favorite film of all time, it is extremely difficult, for me anyway, to pinpoint a number one spot!!! However, I've already chosen The Breakfast Club as my answer many times if asked by someone randomly, or perhaps in a survey online, or whatever. I'm happy with my Breakfast Club reigning as my number one. Truth is, it probably really is! The first four movies on this list are definitely the top four, it's just hard to put in order, so this entire list is in no specific order!! These are just all movies that I definitely have loved over the years or hold special meaning to me, and what not. The Breakfast Club was such an important film to so many people and its premise was so simple yet so poignant. And the theme song, oh my God, the unforgettable song, "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds, just sums it up!!!!

St. Elmo's Fire (1985)

'Breakfast' and 'St. Elmo's' have always been mentioned together by myself or thousands of other people over the years because of several reasons. One reason is probably because of the nickname 'The Brat Pack' that was given to this clique of movie stars, all young up and coming stars back in the 80's, most of them are in either both or one of these two flicks. St. Elmo's like Breakfast Club's theme song, has one of the best soundtracks I have ever owned and you can recognize that musical score from the film anywhere! I love all seven of these main characters and this film even inspired one screenplay that I have been trying to write for years.

Scream (1996)

Totally brilliant!!! If I had to use only two words to describe this film, those would be the words! This movie and the one following it on this list are my two favorite horror movies of all time ABSOLUTELY! And this one was inspired by the other and even mentions it throughout the film! Scream came along in the 90's when the horror genre had kind of died out (no pun intended) and reinvented or reignited the genre and that is a fact as it has been said about Scream by journalists and fans several times over the years. The classic opening scene with Drew Barrymore was one of the best ideas they could have come up! The interesting and memorable characters, the mystery 'whodunit', and Wes Craven at the helm in the director's chair made this script a hit, not to mention a hot cast. So that is why Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter, became a household word, at least to me, as he is my idol, next to John Hughes. I relate to this man because he loves all the things that I love about movies, and he loved all the ones from the same era I do because we grew up with those. And he once said about Scream, "This film is for all those people who grew up going to Blockbuster frequently" because this movie mentions so many other movies, etc. And this movie means a lot to me in another way, I saw it in the theatre for the first time with my cousin/best friend, who I am currently writing a horror movie with.

Halloween (1978)

The master of all horror films by the master, John Carpenter. I saw this movie at such a young age that I should not have been allowed to watch, which is probably why I was afraid to close my eyes during my childhood!!! This movie launched the career of Jamie Lee Curtis and she was superb as Laurie Strode, the shy babysitter stalked by the menacing Michael Myers. Her character's two best friends are a couple of the other main characters and they were played memorably by Nancy Loomis (Annie) and P. J. Soles (Lynda). I actually have always considered P.J. Soles one of my all time favorite actresses, mainly for this film, along with another favorite horror flick of mine, Carrie. The unforgettable score of the film composed by the director himself has got to be one of the most recognizable themes in movie history. And the white mask that killer Michael Myers wears will probably haunt me to my grave but I still love it! "What's the boogeyman?" is a line said by Jamie Lee Curtis near the end of the movie and I almost feel that the film should have been titled The Boogeyman, because for me I will always picture Michael when I picture 'The Boogeyman'. However, one of the film's producers actually suggested that Carpenter call it Halloween and have the story center around that day and that was brilliant because it forever changed the face of Halloween.

This sequel picks right up where the first one left off and gives us another hour and a half of more terror. This one wasn't directed by Carpenter, and came out a few years later, after several films had tried to jump on Halloween's success, thus creating the 'slasher flick' so in this one there is a lot more blood and gore and a bigger body count, but I still loved it! Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence returned but of course there was no P.J. Soles in this one but it did have a pretty good supporting cast. And the music was back, a little updated or whatever, but still that same creepy awesome music!

Imagine my excitement when I first heard the news that my favorite horror flick was being remade! And then to find out that rock god Rob Zombie was writing and directing, I was completely on board. So many of the remakes or 'reboots' that Hollywood keeps churning out, most of them are of horror films, are done so carelessly and for a lack of a better word: cheesy! But I knew that Rob Zombie was very intelligent and I had also read that he was a huge fan of P.J. Soles from the original film so I knew he would do a great job giving his own spin on the story. And he did! His casting of Soles' character Lynda was perfect too, one of my favorite things about this remake, Kristina Klebe, who I'm surprised hasn't had her career take off the way Soles' did back then. But the best thing about this movie and the most brilliant thing Rob could have done was cast Danielle Harris as Annie, the other promiscuous best friend of the main character. Harris had been in two previous Halloween flicks of the franchise in the late 80's when she was only 9 years old and her character was supposed to be the daughter of Jamie Lee Curtis. Danielle was now like 30, and gorgeous, and pulled off coming back for the remake as a different character, and its obvious why Rob had her character survive her attack this time (Annie dies in the original Halloween), because she was so good he wanted to have the option to bring her back in case he made a sequel and he did and she did come back and she stole the show in that movie as well!

This movie came on the heels of Scream's success, written by the same screenwriter, Kevin Williamson, so of course I was first in line at the theatre! Following in Scream's footsteps of casting hot up and coming television stars, this one featured Neve Campbell's co-star from Party Of Five, Jennifer Love Hewitt as its heroine in peril. However, it was the other lead female star, Buffy The Vampire Slayer's Sarah Michelle Gellar, who stole the show! This movie wasn't exactly as great as Scream but I still loved it. It launched the career of Ryan Phillippe, who went on to marry Reese Witherspoon, and Freddie Prinze, Jr., who went on to marry co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar! It also featured another familiar face from TV, Roseanne's Johnny Galecki, as a potential suspect/victim of the mysterious killer with a hook, but my favorite thing about this movie: they casted Anne Heche, my all time favorite actress, in a slightly-more-than-a-cameo role as Entertainment Weekly described as a "spooky Anne Heche"

The Faculty (1998)

Since I'm on this Kevin Williamson kick, another one of his that I loved from the late 90's, in that pretty teenaged ensemble type flick, was The Faculty. This movie was like The Breakfast Club meets Invasion of The Body Snatchers! Josh Hartnett, from Halloween: H20 (which almost made this list but I already had three Halloween flicks on it), leads the younger cast of high school students battling aliens that also included Elijah Wood (Lord Of The Rings) and Usher, but as usual in most of my favorite horror movies, some actress steals the show for me and in this one it was Jordana Brewster. Basically unknown back then, Brewster played the bitchy but sexy cheerleader Delilah, who to a geek like me gets the satisfaction of her ending up with the movie's geek, Elijah Wood! And since this writer's movies were doing so well in the late 90's several familiar veteran actors willingly showed up in various roles throughout this film as school staff members. Robert Patrick (T2: Judgment Day) was the gym coach; Salma Hayek was the school nurse; Piper Laurie (Carrie) was a teacher; and Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers) was the principal. Oh yeah, and Robert Rodriguez, one of my favorite directors, directed this!

As with most of the movies on my list, I've got a story for why it is one of my favorite films. This one holds a special place in my heart because it got me through some tough times. I had never seen it before, and it was after my near-fatal car accident, and I was still recuperating at home (for those of you who don't know me I broke my neck and had to wear what they call a halo, a brace that was drilled into my skull!) Well, the accident was also very scary and not only was it difficult to sleep with such a large contraption connected to my head, I also had a hard time going to sleep because I was afraid of the recurring nightmares I kept having due to the accident. So I found it comforting to at least let myself fall asleep watching TV but I found that it couldn't just be anything on the TV, I had to be watching something mellow, and something familiar. I picked this movie out at Best Buy one day I think along with a few others but this one I hadn't ever seen and when I watched it I fell in love with it. But then, from then on, I popped this movie in every night for months I think to let myself fall asleep to it because it was so cute and very comforting. Therefore, I will never forget how Sandra Bullock and co. got me through some tough times!!! To this day, I can recite the dialogue along with the cast if I am watching it, because I practically know it by heart, obviously from seeing it so many times, or listening to it "While I Was Sleeping"!!!

Anyone who knows me knows that Anne Heche is my all time favorite actress. I have followed her career path ever since I watched her as a teen when she was a teen, on the soap opera Another World. I even predicted she would eventually make it big one day and she did. Most would say this was the role she won that could have catapulted her to more mainstream hits, if her personal romance with Ellen Degeneres hadn't stolen the spotlight....blah, blah, blah. No matter what, this film will always hold a special place for me in my heart as my former best friend and I would watch it over and over and over again, both being fans of Anne Heche. She proved her comedic talent in this movie opposite one of Hollywood's A-list actors, Harrison Ford, and totally held her own as they created movie chemistry. If you have ever ignored this film, or seen it and forgotten it, I highly suggest you watch it again and pay attention to how funny Heche and Ford really are together.

The late 90's was when Anne Heche was finally noticed in Hollywood after "The Juror" with Demi Moore and Alec Baldwin opened the doors to several more bigger parts, this being one of them. Heche stars opposite Vince Vaughn (who she would later again reteam with in the remake of Psycho), Joaquin Phoenix, David Conrad (Ghost Whisperer), and Jada Pinkett in a very controversial film about a man sentenced to death in a foreign country unless his two friends return to share in the crime committed, drug possession. Heche should have been nominated for a best supporting Oscar in my opinion but then again, what do I know?
