Goodfellas (1990)

Many movies of the past showed what it was like to be in the Mafia. Only “Goodfellas” is able to recreate how it feels. The kinetic camerawork, booming sound- track, and brutally honest performances put you inside the life of mobster-turned-informant Henry Hill. You feel his thrill of being included in the world of power and wealth, and also his paranoia when it all comes crashing down. It was another 16 years before Martin Scorsese won the Oscar he so thoroughly deserved, but with “Goodfellas” he secured his place in the ranks of the greatest directors in history.

by Matt McDaniel

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

لماذا
Only one movie in the past two decades captured Academy Awards in all five top categories. And it features mutilations, decapitations, and cannibalism -- not your usual Oscar fare. But “The Silence of the Lambs” secured a place in history with its two indelible lead characters: Jodie Foster's Clarice Starling and, of course, Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. Plus, the suspenseful scenes are so well crafted the film never stops being scary, no matter how many times you watch it.

by Matt McDaniel

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Got action? Hollywood couldn't hold a candle to mid-'90s Hong Kong action flicks, and Jackie Chan is, hands down, one of the most prolific action stars of our time, churn- ing out an epic oeuvre of death-defying sequences and elaborate fight scenes -- no stunt double required. Here, he's nearly upstaged by co-star Michelle Yeoh, who delivers her own jaw-dropping, how-did-she-not-break-her-neck moments. Sure, CGI can make anybody an action star, but this is the real thing, and it's fantastic fun.

by Philip Yu

Faced with a two month hiatus on his martial arts epic “Ashes of Time,” Wong Kar-wai embarked on “Chungking Express” with no script and only an inkling of the movie he wanted to make. Under normal circum- stances, this is a recipe for disaster. But Wong is no normal director; his approach to filmmaking is more akin to Miles Davis than Stephen Spielberg. The film -- a pair of stories of unrequited love -- wanders off on improvised story lines before returning to its key visual and audio themes. (Note: you will hear the song “California Dreamin'” a lot.) The result, aided in no small part by Christopher Doyle's lush cinematography, is one of the most gorgeous, vital, swooningly romantic movies ever committed to celluloid.

by Jonathan Crow

With so many revolutionary, award-winning, and flawless films missing the cut, one might wonder how “Clueless” made our list of modern classics. As if! Just dust off your copy of the Amy Heckerling-helmed rom-com, and you'll quickly notice a number of reasons why -- to this day -- it's adored by critics and fans alike. From its instantly quotable and hilarious script to the costume department's outrageous creations to Alicia Silverstone's star-making performance as Beverly Hills brat-turned-matchmaker Cher Horowitz, the greatest Jane Austen adaptation is not just a slumber party staple; it's a legitimate, generation-defining flick.

by Matt Whitfield

When I started to hear the hoopla around this movie at its release, I was actually quite turned off by the whole notion. How could some bogus “digitally animated” movie made by some unproven minds at a goofy, upstart company (with a silly hopping lamp as a logo!) have completely enthralled both kid and adult moviegoers alike? I mean, Cliff from “Cheers” was one of the voice talents; how good could it be? Boy, was I wrong. Really wrong. I went to see this film with tremendous skepticism, and it did take a few sequences to adjust to the astonishing color and definition (remember, no HD, no 3D in 1995), but I was very quickly won over, and flat out enchanted by the brilliance -- both visual and conceptual -- of what I was seeing. With every scene I marveled at the attention to detail, crafts- manship, and intelligence of the film. And I was grinning. Smiling and laughing even though I was a cynical grown up! With the introduction of Woody, Buzz and the rest of their toybox pals, Pixar forever changed the way everyone views this genre and established animation's prevalence well beyond Saturday mornings. Just check their Oscar mantle... and their bankroll.

by Sean Phillips

In a decade chocked full of flicks with mind-blowing plot twists, this movie stands out as the best. Throughout the film, director Bryan Singer artfully builds and builds the tension until its final moments when that criminal mastermind, Keyser Soze, is finally revealed. The twist comes as a punch to the gut, and in the aftermath, you sense that you just may have seen the devil himself.

by Jonathan Crow

Joel and Ethan Coen have three films on this list that are somehow entirely dissimilar from each other, yet instantly recognizable as the brothers' work. Their first true masterpiece, “Fargo,” tells a story as bleak as the frozen expanses of its setting. A craven car dealer hires two goons to kidnap his own wife, hoping to scam both the crooks and his well-off father-in-law. Of course, it all goes wrong. But at the center is Marge Gunderson, played with aplomb by Frances McDormand. The pregnant, good-natured small-town sheriff might look to be a pushover, but she sees through deceit and uncovers the harsh truths lying below.

by Matt McDaniel

Set in the sunny and somewhat seedy San Fernando Valley in the late '70s and early '80s, this criminally underrated opus chronicles the libidinous life of adult film director Jack Horner (played to perfection by Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Burt Reynolds) and his motley crew of misfits. Written and directed by 1997's wunderkind and Robert Altman's heir apparent, Paul Thomas Anderson, the complex ensemble piece perfectly encapsulates the era thanks to its seductive cinematography, delectable production design, irresistible soundtrack, and the painfully realistic and award-worthy performances of its players, including Julianne Moore, who transitioned from indie movie queen to leading lady, and former underwear model Mark Wahlberg, who dropped trou and immediately became a major movie star.

by Matt Whitfield

Director Steven Soderbergh's ultra-cool caper flick, slickly adapted from the novel by Elmore Leonard, is a sexy tale of two people -- totally wrong for each other -- who share a brief moment of something right. As the thief with a million dollar grin, George Clooney is as charming as ever. Jennifer Lopez is stunning as the tough U.S. marshal hot on his tail... and perhaps a bit smitten with him. It's the hottest screen romance that ever got started in the trunk of a car.

by Philip Yu

Few movies based on novels come to life better on the big screen than in one's own vivid imagination, and this is one of those few, brilliant exceptions. It's Brad Pitt at his best. (All right, that might go to Floyd from “True Romance”). And let's face it: the rest of the talented cast -- including Edward Norton in his follow-up to a powerful performance in “American History X, ” and Helena Bonham Carter who was never so sexy -- play their memorable roles with nuance, hurt and darkness. Heck, even Meatloaf is a creepy standout! As a plus, the essence of the story is easy to relish (especially as a younger, more emboldened man) as a great statement about our supercilious selves and our soft, distracted, modern lives. As humans have we lost touch with our passion, our primal purity? This movie gets you fired up and gets you thinking. And we all know the first -- and second -- rule of Fight Club: “Don't talk about Fight Club.” Here's hoping Tyler Durden doesn't turn my lovehandles into soap.

by Sean Phillips

When it comes to action flicks, there are really only two kinds: movies made before or after 1999. “The Matrix” is the film that changed it all. The Wachowski Brothers' landmark sci-fi action fantasy revolutionized and re-thunk everything we thought was possible with the genre -- throwing in a kitchen sink of cyberpunk plots, kung fu choreography, and bullet-time -- all neatly synthesized into a surprisingly smart, literate story punctuated by Keanu Reeves' trademark “Whoa.”

by Philip Yu

Christopher Guest's laugh-out-loud mock- umentary, which reunited the writer/director with his go-to team of comedians and improv pros, follows deranged dog show competitors -- amateur ventriloquist and bloodhound owner Harlan Pepper (Guest), terrier-obsessed twosome Gerry and Cookie Fleck (Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara), Shih Tzu-doting daddies Stefan Vanderhoof and Scott Donlan (Michael McKean and John Michael Higgins), neurotic Weimaraner-owning yuppies Meg and Hamilton Swan (Parker Posey and Michael Hitchcock), and curvaceous trophy wife (Jennifer Coolidge) and her lady-loving poodle handler (Jane Lynch) -- as they vie for the Mayflower Kennel Club's top prize. Not only is the mockumentary Best in Class, it also happens to be Guest's best work to date.

by Matt Whitfield

“Yi Yi” opens with a wedding, ends with a funeral, and manages to protray much of human experience in between, with all of its joys, surprises, and regrets. The story is simple, detailing the tribulations of a quietly dysfunctional Taiwanese family, but Edward Yang uses his camera like a novelist uses a pen, creating brilliantly observed scenes and remarkably complex characters. The result is one of the richest, most emotionally satisfying movies I've ever seen.

by Jonathan Crow

Gus Van Sant's sometimes dreamy, sometimes nightmarish, but always suspenseful meditation on a Columbine-like school massacre offers no glib moralizing on the subject. Instead, Van Sant's meandering camera captures his characters and their interactions in such an offhand, improvised manner that they feel real. And when the violence does hit -- it's shocking, gut-wrenching, and horribly raw. “Elephant” might just be the most terrifying movie on this list.

by Jonathan Crow

Easily one of the most quotable comedies of the last couple decades. The story takes place in the swinging '70s, and Will Ferrell couldn't be more pitch perfect as Ron Burgundy, San Diego's top newsman. Sure, there is a subtle craftmanship to the storytelling, and the characters are brave and nuanced, but the real beauty of this film is the free-flowing tidbits of knowledge. American history, anyone? Would I have ever guessed what the name “San Diego” actually means in the native language of the Germans who discovered it? Want some lessons in love? Before a big night out hunting for ladies, splash on some Sex Panther (“60% of the time it works, every time”) -- but, really, we all know that “the only way to bag a classy lady, is to give her two tickets to the gun show.” Ferrell and friends (including Steve “I love lamp” Carell before he was Michael on “The Office”) are simply divine in this one. Divine like a rockin' jazz flute solo or a three-cheese fondue.

by Sean Phillips

A clever blend of romantic comedy and science fiction, this mind-twisting, reality-bending relationship tale could only be concocted from the mad genius of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and director Michel Gondry. When a couple undergoes a procedure to have the painful memories of their tumultuous relationship erased, the memories won't go without a fight. With absurd, inventive visuals and a smart script, it's a refreshingly original take on modern romance that is altogether bizarre, brilliant, and not easily forgotten.

by Philip Yu

And the winner for Best Picture is... “Crash.” Really?! “Brokeback Mountain” -- an epic love story between a conflicted ranch hand and a rodeo cowboy who meet and fall for one another in the summer of '63 -- was undoubtedly robbed of film's highest honor at the 78th Academy Awards. However, the critically-acclaimed film, written by renowned western novelist Larry McMurtry and Dianna Ossana (and based on Annie Proulx's short story of the same name), will forever be lauded for its realistic and groundbreaking portrayal of a gay romance starring two of Hollywood's top draws. Speaking of those courageous actors, who can forget the scene in which Jake Gyllenhaal's Jack begs Heath Ledger's Ennis to create a life together at the conclusion of their final camping trip? What about the gut-wrenching final scene in which Ennis finds Jack's old shirt and begins to cry? Forget about labeling this movie as a modern classic; it's a classic for the ages.

by Matt Whitfield

This is not your average revenge flick. The second film in auteur Park Chan-wook's “Vengeance Trilogy” is a dark, stylish masterpiece that signaled a very different kind of filmmaking from South Korea. An ordinary man -- kidnapped and held captive for 15 years without explanation -- is suddenly released, and sets out to find out who did this to him... and why. The mystery plunges him into a stark, nightmarish vertigo of hammer fights and live seafood. It's violent, twisted, and irresistibly engrossing, right down to the shocking gut-punch twist ending.

by Philip Yu

The apocalypse never looked as distressingly plausible as in “Children of Men.” Director Alfonso Cuaron wraps the anxieties of a very nervous decade and presents them with the unflinching realism of a documentary. In one bravura sequence after another, Cuaron follows his characters in seemingly impossible single takes through car crashes and fights that appear to be pulled from yesterday's news. Yet instead of an unrelenting downer, “Children of Men,” buoyed by Clive Owens' effortless performance, becomes an astonishing tale of hard won hope.

by Jonathan Crow

With the end of the Cold War, the spy genre looked to be over, but the “Bourne” movies reinvented it for a new age. The enemies weren't from a foreign power, but from inside the very governmental agencies that are supposed to keep us safe. And while movie trilogies are all the rage in Hollywood, the “Bourne” series set itself apart by making each film better than the last. The final chapter, “The Bourne Ultimatum,” delivered the best action scenes of the three, and most importantly, wrapped up the story in a thematically relevant and emotionally satisfying way.

by Matt McDaniel

The war in Iraq has been so divisive and so opaque that it seems inevitable that so many movies on the subject failed to resonate with audiences or critics. “The Hurt Locker” succeeds because it's not about that one conflict, but uses the setting to comment on the realities of all wars. Written by Mark Boal, who was an embedded journalist with bomb squads in Iraq, the movie doesn't use a traditional Hollywood structure to tell its tale. And Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow gives each scene a hard-bitten intensity while still allowing her actors to fully embody the soldiers who are both repulsed and entranced by the horrors of warfare.

by Matt McDaniel
